CMESNewsletter #47November 2024 | | | | Message From the DirectorNow well
into the autumn semester, several exciting activities and events have taken
place. The CMES Open House, now an annual event, was successfully held in
September, attracting Lund University students and staff eager to learn about
Arabic language courses. We are thrilled to note that the number of students
attending these courses has steadily increased, thanks to the dedication of
CMES language specialist Rafah Barhoum. Another annual event, co-organised with
Peace and Conflict Studies in October, was International Peace Day,
which this year focused on the elusive peace in Israel and Palestine.
Additionally, the new UN Hub on Water was inaugurated in November. As one of
the three institutions collaborating with the UN University, CMES contributes
to advancing research and education on sustainable water solutions in the
Middle East. Looking ahead, there are some exciting research seminars coming
up, addressing a broad range of topics, including feminist analyses of Syrian
refugee mobility, youth participation in peacebuilding, and the history of the
Iraqi Jewish cinema business. CMES is
also continuing its work on research communication and is pleased to welcome
Matilda Skoglöw as the new communication officer. As part of CMES's new popular
science series, Regional Outlook, three articles have been
published this autumn on highly topical issues, including humanitarian aid to
Gaza, the Jordanian parliamentary elections, and the challenges facing peace
activism between Palestinians and Israelis. In addition, there is one article
in Conversation focused on Israel’s prohibition of UNRWA, which has
catastrophic consequences for the Palestinians in Gaza and beyond. Please note
that CMES currently has several open calls and job opportunities. One call is
for three-year project funding, with a deadline of 1 December, and another is
for four CMES writing retreats during 2025, with a deadline of 29 November.
Additionally, there is a job opening for a PhD position in Political Science,
focusing on nuclear politics in the Middle East. A second PhD position in
Islamic Studies, focusing on Islamic ethics in economics, the environment, and
the Middle East, will be announced shortly. Finally, a tenure-track position in
history, with a focus on the Middle East, is expected to be announced soon.
