Fostering international collaboration in academia - balancing openness and responsibility
"International collaboration has long been a cornerstone of academic and educational progress. Engaging across borders enables researchers and educators to exchange ideas, embrace diverse perspectives, and address global challenges in ways that no single institution or country could achieve alone. This openness enriches not only research but also the quality of teaching, preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world. However, as geopolitical tensions rise, there is a growing tendency toward self-limitation and inward focus, with some countries, institutions and governments reevaluating their priorities."

Sebastian Stichel, Chair of the Recruitment Committee and Malin Åkermo, Chair of the Docent Committee. | Two new committees for appointments
As of 1 January, KTH's schools have taken over responsibility for teacher appointments, which has led the Faculty Board to set up two new bodies: the Recruitment Committee and the Docent Committee. These replace the previous central bodies and school recruitment committees and strengthen the strategic work of the Faculty Board. Sebastian and Malin about the new commitees Sebastian och Malin om de nya utskotten | | | Innovation and epilepsy treatment Scientific progress is driven by innovation, and this is exemplified by the research led by Val Zwiller (KTH) and Daniel Lundqvist (KI). Their project, "Imaging the Epileptic Brain using Multimodal Quantum Sensors", aims to transform epilepsy treatment with funding of 2.5 million SEK per year from 2025-2029.Epilepsy affects millions of people. 30% of patients are resistant to medication. Surgery is often the best hope. However, it requires precise mapping of the seizure onset zone (SOZ). Existing imaging techniques such as MRI and EEG can sometimes fail to provide a clear picture. This project brings together two innovative technologies: - Superconducting nanowire photon detectors to detect metabolic changes.
- Optically pumped magnetometers for ultra-precise mapping of brain activity.Together, these techniques will produce detailed maps of abnormal brain activity, improving surgical precision and patient outcomes.
As Val Zviller says: "Innovation is at the heart of scientific research. It's exciting to see how quantum detectors can have a societal impact, in this case by helping to map blood flow in the human brain". | | |
