INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY Area of Advance | Welcome to the September Newsletter! In this issue you find a wide range of interesting content. For example you will meet both a professor in terahertz electronics and 44 coding girls! We are also proud that our Area of Advance Director, Erik Ström,
was featured in Swedish media the other week regarding how the closure of the 2G and 3G network may impact older vehicles and other Internet-of-thing things that use these networks. Link to SVT and dagens.se. And if you missed the AI-talks at Frihamnsdagarna in Gothenburg in the end of August, you can now see the recordings. Enjoy this and much more in this newsletter! Best regards, The ICT team News | Events | Calls | Vacancies | Meet ICT researcher Jan Stake! The work of the Areas of Advance is
interdepartmental, and for Information and Communication Technology Area of
Advance (ICT), this could be supporting research on ICT tools. But
what does this actually mean? We have met Jan Stake, Professor of Terahertz and millimetre wave technology at the
Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), to find out more about his research and how it links to ICT. | | | Professor Jan Stake, MC2. Photo:

Unique images show gas bubbles on red giant star's surface
For the first time, astronomers have captured images of a star other than the Sun in enough detail to track the motion of bubbling gas on its surface. The images of the star, R Doradus, were obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a telescope co-owned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in July and August 2023. They show giant, hot bubbles of gas, 75 times the size of the Sun, appearing on the surface and sinking back into the star’s interior faster than expected. | | | The image illustrates a tiny nanoscale heat engine connecting hot and cold sides. New understanding of the limits on nano-noise
Thanks to nanoscale devices as small as human cells, researchers can create groundbreaking material properties, leading to smaller, faster, and more energy efficient electronics. However, to fully unlock the potential of nanotechnology, addressing noise is crucial. A research team at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden has taken a significant step toward unraveling fundamental constraints on noise, paving the way for future nanoelectronics. | | |
Girls Code Club opening doors to the world of programming
44 girls participated in this years session of Girls Code Club, CSE's workshop in programming for girls in the gymnasium. In a final seminar the girls presented their work in front of an audience, which included the dean of the IT Faculty Dick Stenmark. "Girl’s Code Club is a fantastic initiative that enables and encourages
young girls to explore the world of programming and problem-solving in a
fun and accessible way. I was totally
overwhelmed by the fact that the event managed to assemble a whole
theatre filled with high school girls despite being in the middle of the
summer", says Dick Stenmark and continues:
"The IT
industry has long – and for no good reason – been dominated by men.
Women are likely to bring different perspectives on software and what
problems it should address, so initiatives like GCC are highly needed
for a broader and more inclusive development of IT for the future". In the end of the workshop the girls were asked about their experience, and here are two of their answers:
I actually hated programming before I came to GCC, and now I really like it. I really enjoyed getting to know other peoples paths and how they got to where they are now. I liked that you went through the concepts and that we had time to do the exercises as well as people coming and talking about their jobs connected to programming. I also really enjoyed having so many TAs that could help, as well as the fact that you were great teachers. Then I of course enjoyed the hot chocolate at lunch.
| Large language models in CHAIR’s new themeChalmers AI Research Centre adds Large Language Models for Mathematics and Programming to its group of research themes. This theme explores their potential of LLMs to contribute to mathematical reasoning and software creation, extending beyond traditional methods and potentially uncovering novel approaches and solutions. Because of the success of the other four CHAIR themes – which have been active for over a year – and their work in community building within different fields, they have all been extended for yet another year. The themes are AI for Scientific Data Analysis, Interpretable AI, Structured Learning, and AI and Robotics for Health and Rehabilitation.
| | | Watch recordings from Frihamnsdagarna about AIOpportunities and risks with AI are topics that are discussed intensively, not least when it comes to education and democracy, and this year Chalmers devoted our stage program at Frihamnsdagarna to these issues. Now you can watch the recordings from the two seminars (in Swedish).

From 26 September to 29 September, this year's Göteborg Book Fair will be in full swing. One of the themes this year is Space, and Chalmers is excited to be contributing to this stellar topic.
| | | | | AI Ethics with Aksel Sterri:
Neither tyrant nor slave: Against AGI
Creating artificial general intelligence (AGI) is wrong if it risks being misaligned with human values, as it could pose an existential threat to humanity. This talk will argue that even aligning AGI to serve human values is unethical because it curtails the AGI's autonomy. Deliberately creating an AGI that is forced to serve human values would be wrong for the same reason it would be wrong to create happy human slaves: it shows insufficient respect for their autonomy. Aksel Sterri, PhD in Philosophy, is the Research Director at the Oslo-based think tank Langsikt, which is dedicated to improving governance of vexed issues such as AI and biotechnology.

Tid & plats: 12:00

Structured Learning 2024 WorkshopWelcome to the 2024 workshop
hosted by the CHAIR theme Structured learning, which is held for the second year.
This is a 3 days lunch-to-lunch event with international and local speakers. We broadly cover topics related to Structured Learning, targeting specifically the following questions: - How can we encode structure (e.g., scientific domain knowledge) into learning systems?
- How does domain knowledge affect uncertainty quantification and out-of-distribution predictions?
- Can these insights enable us to solve problems in a data and computationally-efficient manner? We will have a particular focus on inverse and surrogate modeling.
- How can these strategies help scientific discovery?
Location: A Working Lab, Chalmers Campus Johanneberg
