CMESNewsletter #48January 2025 | | | | Message From the DirectorAs we embark on the new year, a wide array
of exciting research activities is planned for this semester. The CMES spring
program is nearly set, featuring a series of highly topical seminars, several
of which will address the dramatic changes unfolding in Syria (details below).
Recent analyses on Syria have also been published in The
Conversation and the CMES
Regional Outlook. This series will soon also be available in
Arabic! CMES continues to advance its work on
developing a robust and cutting-edge data infrastructure through the Middle
East Data Lab, in collaboration with the Lund Social Science Methods
Centre. The overarching aim is to produce policy-relevant reports addressing
various topics, including climate change, war, conflict, migration, regional
cooperation, security, and state- and peace-building.
To support the work on writing research
applications, CMES will organise a lunch-to-lunch retreat to foster a
collaborative and supportive culture of exchanging knowledge, experiences and
draft proposals. On that note, CMES wants to warmly congratulate Yafa Shanneik
on successfully securing an ERC Consolidator Grant for the project “Governing
Health, Family and Religion: The Biopolitics of Genetic Counselling and
Religious Family Formations”
CMES staff continues to grow steadily.
This week, we were pleased to welcome Purnendu Sardar, who has joined as a
post-doctoral researcher in the ECO-Syria project. Additionally, Amir
Naghibi is spending a writing retreat at CMES this spring. The recruitment
processes for PhD candidates in Islamic Studies and Political Science are now
in their final interview stages, and we look forward to welcoming the successful
candidates soon.
