This December newsletter highlights our new
support materials, 3R-events and reports from meetings organised by the Swedish
3Rs Center.
Support material
for the acclimatisation of zebrafish prior to experiments
To achieve reliable research results, animals are commonly acclimatised
after having experienced something stressful, for example after being
transported. In order to help researchers when choosing the length of
acclimatisation for zebrafish prior to experiments, the Swedish 3Rs Center has
produced a support material.
Additional research funding bodies have endorsed our statement on the 3Rs
Earlier this year, the 3Rs Center finalised a statement on the 3Rs for research funding bodies. Three more organisations have now endorsed the statement. These organisations are Barndiabetesfonden, Reumatikerförbundet and Vetenskapsrådet.
Support material
on group and single housing of rabbits
The rabbit is a naturally social species and must be kept in a group
according to Swedish research animal legislation. The Swedish 3Rs Center has
created a support material to help laboratory animal facilities house rabbits
in groups, as well as to give rabbits as good of a welfare as possible when
they need to be housed alone.
The support
material contains information about the natural behaviour of rabbits, basic
conditions for good rabbit housing, how rabbits can be introduced to and housed
in groups, as well as what is important to consider if rabbits need to be
single housed.
The support
material is available as a report and a
summarising
poster in English.
On October 17th, the Swedish 3Rs Center organised a meeting for the Swedish Animal Welfare Bodies. About 50 participants from 14 different Animal Welfare Bodies participated and were offered lectures, workshops and time to discuss with each other.
Swedish Animal Welfare Bodies at the laboratory animal facilities are an important target group for the Swedish 3Rs Center. Therefore, for several years now, the 3Rs-center has organised an annual meeting for people who work in Swedish Animal Welfare Bodies.
A summary of the meeting is available in Swedish only.
During the autumn of 2024, the Swedish 3Rs Center organised two meetings
for the Swedish research funding
bodies. The purpose of this work
is to increase the implementation of 3Rs in calls for proposals for research funding.
An increased focus on the 3Rs in research funding can help ensure that the
best method is used in each individual study. In this way, the quality of
Swedish research is ensured through more relevant research results and better
use of resources. Organisations that finance research are therefore an
important target group for the Swedish 3Rs Center.

2025 EPAA 3Rs Student Grants – call for submissions
Call for submissions for the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) 3Rs Student
Grants 2025
is open. Every year, the EPAA supports the
participation of students and young scientists in high-profile international
meetings dedicated to the development and acceptance of 3R alternatives to
animal testing. For 2025, two full
grants of €1,000 each are available to facilitate participation in: MPS World
Summit 2025, SETAC 2025 and EUROTOX 2025.
We encourage students and young scientists with
promising work in the field of 3Rs to apply.
The Swedish 3Rs Center is the executive body of the National Committee for the Protection of Animals used for Scientific Purposes and part of the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
