CMESNewsletter #46August 2024 | | | | CMES Kick-off, Ven 26-27 August. | Message From the DirectorAfter a well-deserved summer break, CMES has had a flying start with hosting the annual conference of the Swedish Middle East and North Africa Network (SWEMENA) in late August. This year’s conference saw an unprecedented turnout, with participant numbers doubling compared to last year and representing diverse disciplines and backgrounds in Middle Eastern studies. A highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Charlotta Sparre, former director of the Swedish Dialogue Institute in Amman. Following this milestone event, the CMES team retreated to the picturesque isle of Ven to coordinate and plan for the upcoming academic year. The autumn program for the CMES seminar series is already set, offering a broad range of exciting topics. Kicking off in September, CMES will launch the new MECW’s three-year project focusing on Swedish civil society actors in the Occupied Palestinian Territories since 1967. Additionally, this year’s International Peace Day, on 24 September, is focused on the elusive quest for peace in Israel Palestine and is co-organised with the Peace and Conflict Studies. Finally, there is a research seminar in late September on Islam, economics and the environment by Sami Al-Daghistani, our new associate lecturer in Islamic studies, who recently joined CMES and Lund University. CMES staff continues to expand with Adam Almqvist joining as a post-doctoral researcher in a project on political youth in conflict, Lovisa Rosenquist Ohlsson, beginning as a PhD student, and the addition of two new finance officers, Malin Wettemark and Maira Viana Einarsson. We are also pleased to announce that Sinem Kavak, a researcher at LUCSUS, will join CMES this autumn for a writing retreat.
Do not miss CMES Open House next week on 11 September at 11.15-12.30 where students and researchers at Lund University are invited to meet with CMES staff and learn more about our Centre and the Arabic language courses offered. Arabic snacks and sweets will be provided! This autumn, CMES is offering three Arabic language courses, with application deadline quickly approaching on 11 September. Don’t miss out!
