With the dramatic and unexpectedly swift collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria in December, the CMES seminar program this spring features several public lectures by leading Syrian experts, including Orwa Ajjoub from Malmö University and Aron Lund from the Swedish Defence Research Agency, both of whom have attracted large audiences. Next week, CMES, in collaboration with Lund City Library, will host a public lecture by the award-winning Middle East correspondent Cecilia Uddén. Additionally, two other topical research seminars in March will focus on Sudan and Gaza.
Several calls for applications are currently open at CMES. The annual call for project proposals has been announced, providing funding for three-year research projects with high scientific potential through the strategic research area Middle East in the Contemporary World. Following the positive experience from last year and in response to student demand, CMES is once again offering student internships this spring.
CMES continues to expand through strategic recruitment, welcoming additional staff members. We are pleased to announce that Dina Tawfik and Khaoula Elomrani will be joining us as PhD candidates in Islamic Studies and Political Science. These positions are linked to two ongoing research projects: Nuclear Middle East and Economic Cosmology. Furthermore, a call for a tenure-track position in Middle Eastern History will be announced shortly.
Finally, it is exciting to note the growing number of articles produced by CMES scholars, which are reaching a global readership far beyond academia through The Conversation.
