Eventfull spring at Pufendorf IAS

Dear friends of the Pufendorf IAS,

Spring has arrived in Lund, and at the Pufendorf Institute, we embrace the season of renewal and inspiration fully. Spring also marks the selection of new Theme groups, and we also look forward to welcoming three NordIAS Fellows from our partner institutes in the Network of Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies.  Many of our own Theme Fellows visit in the spring, particularly in May and June, when seminars and workshops bring their research into focus.  

We look forward to having a full house will activities covering the spectrum from a new interdisciplinary tax center to interactive experience reflecting how the digital society affects human rights.  

This year, we are expanding our reach to Stockholm for the Greyzone Genomics Seminar and a panel discussion on the evidence-based assessment of genetic technology in international conflict.

Three new Themes starting in September

We were pleasantly surprised by the many applications to start a Theme at Pufendorf IAS. After the usual thorough process, we are happy to announce that three new Themes will start 1 September 2025. As usual, they present a wide range of interdisciplinary research ideas. Just look at these titles:

Neurotechnologies: Delivering their Responsible Development and Use - coordinators: Kristina Hug (Medical Faculty) and Aurelija Lukoševičienė (Faculty of Law)

Let's talk About Swedish Forests: From Polarization to Sustainable Transition - coordinators: Fariborz Zelli (Faculty of Social Sciences) and Maria Johansson (Faculty of Engineering)

Next Generation Healthscapes - coordinators: Henrik Loodin (Faculty of Social Sciences) and Jonas Borell (Faculty of Engineering) 

We are going to present these Themes in more detail in our next newsletter. 

Pufendorf IAS will announce the next call for applications to start a Theme early autumn - watch this place!

Still time to apply for an ASG! 

The call is open, next deadline for applications to start an Advanced Study Group at Pufendorf IAS is 10 May 2025. If granted, the ASG begins in September 2025.

7 May Theme Greyzone Genomics which will take Pufendorf IAS on a road trip to Stockholm and hold their event at (and with) the Swedish Defence University. Register asap, seats are filling up.

15 May Theme DigiJustice: Rethinking Digital Inequalities and Human Rights in the Age of AI invite you to take part in conversations and in an exhibition focusing on: Human Rights in the Age of AI. Register for a conference and an exhibition:

26 May Theme Ancient Synagogues and the Human Sensorium will provide you with an opportunity to experience the past with all your senses, capturing the entire sensorial range experienced by the people of previous centuries and millennia. Read more and register for this day with talks and demos:

5 June Theme DigiTax is launching Sweden's first interdisciplinary tax centre to address the mounting challenges facing public finance. By linking research to specific societal challenges, they want to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient tax policy, while also reinforcing Sweden’s position in the global debate.Read more and register for the launch of an interdisciplinary tax centre:

Last but not least: 

20 September Theme Ecological Loss and Damage will host an exhibition People, Patterns, and Places
The exhibition is a collaboration between the Pufendorf Theme, the LU profile area Nature-based Future Solutions and artists from Mångfaldens Mönster. More information to follow in our next Newsletter!

There is serious money in interdisciplinary research

Finally a seminar on how to get those big grants for interdisciplinary research: At Pufendorf IAS on 2 June 13.00- 16-ish
How does one propose cross- and interdisciplinary research projects for funding processes? What are the common pitfalls and how does one avoid them? And what opportunities are available for researchers Lund University to fund this type of research?

Sustainability Week 5-10 of May

The Sustainability week is an annual event in Lund organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The week serves as a platform for bringing together ideas, cross-disciplinary collaborations, raising public awareness and for inspiring sustainable change.

As usual, several talks are held here at Pufendorf IAS, both in Swedish and English. Here are some examples:

Kulturnatten 20 September

"The culture night" is another annual event in Lund. Cultural institutions organise events and open their houses - also during the evening and night. The Pufendorf IAS opens the doors to the public, we'll give guided tours in our beautiful building, host interesting popular science talks by Lund University researchers. Much to our delight, we will also display exhibitions and demos hosted by the Themes Ecological Loss and Damage, DigiJustice and Ancient Synagogues and the Human Sensorium. Our culture night will start during daytime, that's for sure.
