| | | World’s strongest battery. World’s strongest battery paves way for light, energy-efficient vehicles
When cars, planes, ships or computers are built from a material that functions as both a battery and a load-bearing structure, the weight and energy consumption are radically reduced. A research group at IMS is now presenting a world-leading advance in so-called massless energy storage – a structural battery that could halve the weight of a laptop, make the mobile phone as thin as a credit card or increase the driving range of an electric car by up to 70 percent on a single charge.
| | | Simulations Improve Variation Management in ManufacturingVariation is a universal aspect of manufacturing that adds complexity to the production process. It can affect all parameters, leading to differences in the form and size of produced parts, which may affect the whole product. To tackle these challenges, researchers at Wingquist Laboratory are developing new methods to manage variation. One outcome of their research is the well-established RD&T software. | | | | | | |
Several actions needed for the green transition of the iron and steel industry

Faster and more predictable permitting processes, climate requirements in procurement and national risk sharing linked to municipal investments in housing and public services. These are some of the policy measures highlighted as important to accelerate the transition to fossil-free steel, according to a new research report.

Generating shared knowledge in digital innovation networks
To develop new digital products, it is often necessary that multiple organizations with different areas of expertise work together in "innovation networks". Adrian Bumann’s doctoral thesis investigates how such collaboration takes place, and specifically how those organizations create shared "architectural" knowledge on how different technology components fit together.
| | | Filip Johnsson, Energy Technology, is Professor of Energy Systems.
| | | He is proposed to join the Climate Policy CouncilThe Swedish Climate Policy Council has proposed to the government to appoint Filip Johnsson, Energy Technology, as a new member of the Council until June 30, 2027. The council is part of Sweden's climate policy framework and is tasked with evaluating how the government's policies are compatible with the climate goals that the Riksdag and government have decided. The council also proposes to the government to appoint current member Olof Johansson Stenman, University of Gothenburg, as the new vice chairman, a post previously held by Björn Sandén, Technology Management and Economics, Chalmers.
| | | Wide range of disciplines at historic professorial inaugurationfor the first time since 1943, a complete gender balance was achieved among the new professors, with 50% women and 50% men. This marks an important step forward in Chalmers' efforts to increase gender equality in the academy.

Chalmers has been Sweden’s highest-regarded educational institution for the twelfth consecutive year, according to the reputation index for Swedish universities and colleges.
| | | | | Vera-podden:Maximizing Herring: From Sea to Table
In this episode of Verapodden, Chalmers´podcast, we meet food scientist Ingrid Undeland, who advocates increased consumption of herring – for food security, the climate and our health. Swedes often eat fillets from imported fish, while catches from our own seas end up as animal feed abroad. With new technology, we can use nutrients from the whole fish, extract protein from algae and create healthy, climate-friendly dishes from our marine resources. Antioxidants from cranberries and rosemary also help fish stay fresh longer. Rebecka Strand, PhD student at Chalmers University of Technology, also participates in the episode. | | | SEMINARS, COURSES & EVENTS |

SEMINAR. Welcome to a seminar in the series SmallTalks [about Nanoscience] arranged by the Nano Area of Advance, this time with Finja Tietjen, Doctoral Student, Condensed Matter and Materials Theory, Physics
Abstract:
Modern technology demands rapid nanoscale material manipulation, highlighting the need to understand non-equilibrium behavior on fundamental scales. While thermodynamic principles have shaped macroscopic machines, translating them to the (sub)picosecond timescale of material excitations drives the emergent field of ultrafast thermodynamics. This talk shows an example of the successful application of thermodynamics to ultrafast phenomena – the definition of entropy production by magnetic degrees of freedom in pump-probe experiments. In our theoretical approach, we consider a ferromagnet excited by a terahertz laser, which we can describe with the stochastic Langevin equation. Using tools from stochastic thermodynamics, we define entropy production and estimate the heat production by magnetic degrees of freedom. In addition, we simulate the dependency of the magnetization dynamics and therefore entropy production on the pump laser. This allows us to predict and guide experiments and further development of nanotechnology which includes magnetic degrees of freedom.

Tid & plats: 12:00
