CMESNewsletter #36May/June 2023 | | | | Message From the DirectorWarm summer greetings from the team at the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies! The spring semester at Lund University has now come to an end in the best possible way with warm “Mediterranean” weather. Still to come at CMES are two highly topical panels in Almedalen at the end of June on climate change in the Middle East and on the political repercussions of the recent mass protests in Israel. The well-deserved summer vacation is then approaching after an intense spring with lots of exciting research activities. To mention a few highlights, CMES hosted a festive inaugural lecture of the Olof Palme professorship held by Raphael Cohen Almagor during 2023. CMES launched a new series, Regional Outlook, that provides up-to-date analyses on topical issues related to the Middle East. An international workshop was held on Israel’s democratic backsliding and an edited volume will be published early next year on this theme. A one-day symposium on Turkish political memory was organised as part of the MECW project “Beyond Sacred/Secular Cities.” CMES continues to expand in terms of both research and staff. The open tenure track position in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies received an impressive number (50) of applications. CMES is delighted to welcome Dr. Hebatalla Taha who starts her position on 1 September. CMES is also looking forward to welcoming Dr. Nina Gren, Department of Social Anthropology, for an autumn writing retreat and Fulbright visiting scholar Professor Dalia Dassa Kaye, UCLA, for the academic year 2023/24. Please also note that CMES has calls out now for a tenure track position in Islamic Studies and for research initiation funds. Finally, the three years of re-organising CMES 2.0 is soon coming to a successful end with the autumn launch of the third final interdisciplinary MECW-project, Conflict, Environment and Sustainable Development in Syria, which will run between 2023-2026. Coming up after the summer in late August is the annual SWEMENA (Swedish Middle East & North Africa Network) conference hosted this year by Stockholm University with many CMES scholars presenting their research. A new exciting CMES seminar program for the autumn will also be posted on the website.
