Interview with Dean Rauni Niskanen: The war in Ukraine has focused on the VH faculty's areas in terms of food supply and the spread of infection, among other things. At the same time, preparations are underway for the expansion of the Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing programmes, which will have its first addition of students already this autumn. The need for recruitment is great at the faculty and the competition for the skills needed is fierce.
The faculty board held a meeting on 23 March. A new delegation of authority, new rules of procedure and appointing members of boards and committees were some of the items on the agenda. The board was also briefed on the status of the expansion of the degree programmes in veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing, as well as on the financial perspective on skills provision.
Update on the expansion of the Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing programmes
The expansion of the Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing programs is progressing. As decisions are made, new thoughts, insights and questions can arise for students, teachers and other staff affected by the expansion. For the project group it is vital to hear about these as soon as possible. Therefore, we hold a number dialogue meetings during the spring. Everyone is welcome with thoughts and questions.
In March, we talk to the student union, subject representatives and course representatives. An open dialogue lunch meeting was held online March 25. Throughout spring, project manager Anders Bjurstam and head of education, vice dean Johanna Penell, also are available for several open lunch drop-in dialogues.
In recent years, VH has received several generous donations and gifts in favor of research and several of them have formed funds.
The most recent funds are Skriftställare Birgitta Carlssons fond (SBCF) and Gustafsson and Whitmore International Dairy Cattle Research Award Fund (GWF).
The calls opened at the end of March. For more details about these and other funds and to apply.
Representatives from VH in the European Commission's expert platform
"EU Platform on Animal Welfare" is the European Commission's expert platform with the objective
to enhance dialogue on animal welfare questions between authorities, companies, researchers and the surrounding society. The work includes discussions on application of EU animal welfare legislation, voluntary animal welfare commitments from companies, how animal welfare can provide increased market value and this is in line with the ongoing and comprehensive revision of EU animal welfare legislation.
Linda Keeling is since the start in 2017 a member of the platform as an independent expert. Harry Blockhuis is a substitute member and also has a roll with observer status as director of the European Reference Centre on Animal Welfare for Ruminants and Equines. Now Rebecka Westin and Lotta Berg take a personal mandate in two subgroups.
“It is a good recognition of SLU and the Department of Animal Environment and Health to be be included in this context, where Gård & Djurhälsan and the Swedish Board of Agriculture are also represented from Sweden," says Lotta Berg
Rebecka Westin is part of a group on animal welfare for pigs and Lotta Berg in a group that handles animal welfare at the time of killing.
