Rektorer lärde sig leda lärandet för hållbar utveckling
I mitten av mars arrangerade GMV den tjugonde lärarfortbildningen om globala målen. Efter att ha gått igenom alla 17 mål på lika många fortbildningar och haft två tillfällen om hur alla målen är integrerade var fokus denna gång rektorernas roll i lärandet för hållbar utveckling. Vad har skolledare för ansvar för att intentionerna i Agenda 2030 lärs ut i alla stadier av det livslånga lärandet? Göteborgs universitets tidigare rektor Pam Fredman och forskaren Anna Mogren gav skolledarna inspiration och konkreta exempel på ledarskapets betydelse för att utbilda för hållbar utveckling.

Facts are one thing – values another
"In the climate debate you can often hear the argument that ‘science requires us to cut emissions’. But that argument is problematic,” says Christian Azar, Professor of Energy and Environment at Chalmers University of Technology. In a filmed keynote presentation at the Act Sustainable Research Conference he questions the "science-demands" rhetoric in a discussion about the relationship between science and politics.

Who are the #StudentsOfGbg?
Right now, the Student Sustainability Hub is offering an answer, among many, to the question: Who are the students of Gothenburg? Through the campaign #StudentsOfGbg students get the opportunity to present themselves and their sustainability commitment on the Student Sustainability Hub`s Instagram. Nominations for the campaign are still open for students at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg.

Meet Handels Council for Sustainability!
Handels Council for Sustainability is a new initiative at HHGS, the Student Union at the School of Business Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The council consist of representatives from different parts of the student union’s activities and was created to set the agenda within the union. We talked to Olivia Lind, Vice President of HHGS to hear more about the council and the upcoming plans.

Easier to find researchers with knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals
The 670 members of the Research Network for Sustainable Development are
searchable in the open database www.gmvnatverk.se.
This week a new version of the database was launched in which members
can add which of the Sustainable Development Goals that their research
contributes to, and the regions and countries in the world they
collaborate with.

Researchers fika no. 2: Can Sweden achieve negative C02- emissions?
Warmly welcome to Researchers fika, a new activity for the Research Network for Sustainable Development at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. At each fika you will get to listen to speed talks on a sustainability-oriented topic from researchers representing different disciplines followed by an opportunity to network and digitally share your favorite fika with the other participants in the meeting. The Two Bolivias
In the early years of the twenty-first century, indigenous and working-class people of Bolivia mobilised in protest of increasing inequalities and a divided society. These mobilizations eventually brought Evo Morales to power in 2006 as the country’s first indigenous president.
This and the past 15 years of development formed the backdrop to a Global Sustainable Futures webinar on 2 March, where Anders Burman and Claudia Cossio presented their research and collaboration with Bolivia.

Sustainable production focus in the premiere of the Researchers fika event series
An afternoon in the middle of March the new GMV
collaboration concept "Researchers fika" was carried out. Ulla Tang
and Mélanie Despeisse from the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers respectively,
gave speed talks on the theme "Measuring sustainability in production
systems: Examples from health care and manufacturing".

Data is the key to understanding emissions of chemicals from Swedish households In a FRAM Centre financed project, Mikael Gustavsson has estimated chemical emissions from Swedish households. He has also calculated the potential risks for the environment with the help of data and mathematical modelling. Now he presents his results.

Here are this year's finalists of WIN WIN Award
This year's theme for the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award is anti-corruption. During the past few months, the world-leading sustainability award has sought nominations from individuals and organisations that actively combat corruption and thereby improve the opportunities for the world's countries to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The jury is now presenting the five finalists who have a chance to win this year's award, with a prize of one million SEK.

MIRAI 2.0 Digital Research and Innovation week
The University of Gothenburg is coordinating the Swedish-Japanese collaboration MIRAI 2.0. The project focuses on early career researchers and aims to increase and deepen research collaboration between Sweden and Japan. On June 7-11, 2021 the University of Gothenburg is hosting MIRAI 2.0 Digital Research and Innovation week. The theme for the event is International Collaboration in a Digital Era – Fostering Innovative Minds for the Future. The event will include a number of scientific sessions within Ageing, Material Science, Sustainability, AI, Innovation and Entrepreneurship as well as matchmaking activities, poster session and more. GMV:s director Jan Pettersson is contact person for the MIRAI Sustainability focus area.

Hemarbete, ledarskap och medarbetarskap under pandemin
Centrum för forskning om arbete och sysselsättning (WE) bjuder in till webbinarium tillsammans med Högskolan i Skövde. Covid-19-pandemin har hållit världen i ett järngrepp i över ett år och har utöver många sjuka och döda bidragit till andra stora samhällseffekter. En sådan effekt är en betydligt ökad grad av hemarbete. Flexibilisering av arbetet är ingen ny trend, men pandemin har bidragit till en mycket snabb omställning. I det här seminariet kommer vi beskriva fördelar och utmaningar relaterat till hemarbete, men även hur en ökad grad av hemarbete påverkar och utmanar ledarskap och medarbetarskap samt dess förutsättningar.

Reality Studio: Co-creating Change Makers
This seminar aims to inspire all course leaders and examiners through the sharing of experiences and reflections from Reality Studio, a masters course in architecture based on several years of international collaborations and partnerships in low and middle-income countries.
We also hope that future change makers, students at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers take the chance to learn more about Reality Studio and how it can be one way to develop skills and methods to realize change.

Big breakthrough for ’massless’ energy storage
Researchers from Chalmers University of Technology have produced a structural battery that performs ten times better than all previous versions. It contains carbon fibre that serves simultaneously as an electrode, conductor, and load-bearing material. Their latest research breakthrough paves the way for essentially ’massless’ energy storage in vehicles and other technology.

Environmental interest growing – despite the pandemic
Sweden has seen a growing interest in environmental issues during the pandemic, according to statistics from the SOM Institute at the University of Gothenburg. This came as a surprise to consumption researcher John Magnus Roos, particularly in light of the media shift away from the environment and towards the pandemic and public health. But he has a possible explanation: we are consuming less and have changed our behaviour. Read more

Från rektors blogg: Jämställdhet – en hållbarhetsfråga
Den 26 januari 1921 beslutade riksdagen att kvinnor skulle få rösträtt. Vi var inte först i världen, men beslutet var ett första steg mot ett mer hållbart Sverige. Universiteten öppnade för kvinnor 1873 och kvinnor tilläts ta akademisk examen inom vissa områden. Det måste på den tiden varit svårt att som kvinna smälta in i Uppsala och Lund och det var sannolikt inte tal om lika villkor och öppna dörrar. Så sent som år 2006 fick vårt universitet sin första kvinnliga rektor – Pam Fredman.

The Nordic Council of Ministers supports joint research on sexual harassment at work with 3,7 million Danish crowns. The initiative is especially focused on prevention and methods for intervention through industry studies and comparative studies of different industries.

Forskarnas cellulosatråd kan göra stor nytta för
elektroniska textiler
Elektroniska textilier kan skapa revolutionerande nya
möjligheter, inte minst inom hälso- och sjukvård. Av hållbarhetsskäl behöver
denna nya typ av mjuk elektronik göras av förnybara material. Nu presenterar
ett forskarlag, lett från Chalmers, en cellulosatråd med mycket intressanta
egenskaper för elektroniska textiler. Forskningen publicerades nyligen i den vetenskapliga tidskriften
ASC Applied Materials & Interfaces.

Kustlandskapet påverkar sjögräsängars förmåga att dämpa klimatförändringarSjögräsängar har en fantastisk förmåga att lagra koldioxid. En ny forskningsstudie från Göteborgs universitet visar att det omgivande landskapets sammansättning och egenskaper påverkar ängarnas lagringskapacitet. Ålgräs återplanteras med hjälp av 1 800 ton sand
Ålgräsängarna har minskat kraftigt i Bohuslän. Nu ska Länsstyrelsen och Göteborgs universitet undersöka om grov sand på havsbotten kan gynna det hotade ålgräset. Metoden ska testas vid Lilla Askerön mellan Tjörn och Orust.

Valuing our water
Through the WaterPlan project, researchers from the DRICKS center at the
Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering are investigating what the
need to protect our water resources looks like and how Swedes value this
protection. Part of the project means that the researchers will use surveys to
investigate and map how people prioritize and what they are actually willing to
pay to protect our drinking water sources.
