INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY Area of Advance | Welcome back! It's time to go back to work again after the summer holidays. Hopefully the time off has re-energised us all to look forward to the autumn. As usual, there is a lot going on. Already in August, you are welcome to visit Chalmers at Frihamnsdagarna in Gothenburg. In addition to visit our stand, you are welcome to a couple of exciting talks on AI, arranged by Chalmers. And this week the new students arrived to campus in a festive atmosphere. You will find this and much more in this newsletter. Best regards, The ICT team News | Events | Calls | Vacancies | The new students have arrivedOn 20 August, around 3000 new students were welcomed to Chalmers when the reception and introduction weeks started. Successful launch of the new weather satellite
| The new Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS) will collect important data on moisture and temperature levels in the Earth's atmosphere on weather and climate to give us a much better understanding of conditions at the poles. Another important task will be to measure the amount of ice inside clouds. - The AWS is equipped with a new type of instrument, an advanced microwave radiometer, which can measure ice formation deep inside clouds. This is a new type of observational data compared to existing weather satellites,’ says Patrick Eriksson, Professor of global environmental measurements at Chalmers. | | | | |
CSE colloquium: Recipes to Make Sustainable Machine Learning
Speaker: Carla Fabiana Chiasserini, Full Professor at Politecnico di Torino, Italien Time: Aug 26 at 12.00-13:00 Venue: EA, EDIT-building
The training and execution of Machine Learning (ML) models pose relevant challenges, as they often require substantial computational and energy resources. To mitigate the ML footprint on the computational resources of single network nodes, new distributed ML paradigms have emerged, as they can distribute the computational load across different network nodes, besides providing better privacy preservation. However, despite such advantages, distributed ML too may face significant hurdles, namely, (i) slower execution of the ML training or inference, and (ii) high bandwidth consumption on the links connecting the participating network nodes whenever the output of intermediate processing has to be transferred from one node contributing to the ML pipeline to another. In this talk, we discuss such issues and how they can be solved by leveraging dynamic neural networks.

Adam Smith meets AI Doomers
This talk examines the paradox of free markets, which have driven prosperity yet now accelerate our approach toward potentially catastrophic artificial superintelligence. I argue that even staunch free-market advocates shouldn't trust markets to handle the development of superintelligence, and even with government regulation, we are unlikely to achieve a good outcome. James Miller is a Professor of Economics at Smith College. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from Stanford University.

Conference:
The Disruptive Role of Data and AI in the Life Sciences
A Joint Conference between DDLS, WASP and WASP-HS.
The conference will focus on different aspects of research where
collaboration over scientific domains is essential and will explore the
following topics:
- How data- and AI-driven research is shaping the future of life science.
- Development of new approaches to human-in-the-loop technologies and their use.
- The need for studies at the intersection of society, AI, and data driven life sciences.

Structured Learning 2024 WorkshopWelcome to the 2024 workshop
hosted by the CHAIR theme Structured learning, which is held for the second year.
This is a 3 days lunch-to-lunch event with international and local speakers. We broadly cover topics related to Structured Learning, targeting specifically the following questions: - How can we encode structure (e.g., scientific domain knowledge) into learning systems?
- How does domain knowledge affect uncertainty quantification and out-of-distribution predictions?
- Can these insights enable us to solve problems in a data and computationally-efficient manner? We will have a particular focus on inverse and surrogate modeling.
- How can these strategies help scientific discovery?
Location: A Working Lab, Chalmers Campus Johanneberg

presented a gathered list of all their current offered fundings. Here we suggest some of
them: | | | Call for proposals: Collaborative project for civil-military synergies
This call for proposals is a joint effort by Vinnova and the Swedish Armed Forces. We are now looking for consortia that can contribute to the development of innovative and ground-breaking technology solutions. The overall aim is to strengthen cooperation between the civilian sector and the defense sector to contribute to dealing with defence-related problems and at the same time strengthen Sweden´s competitiveness. The call for proposals is aimed at consortia consisting of at least two actors where companies, universities, university colleges, research institutes and other relevant actors may be included. At least one business actor must be active in the defense sector in Sweden, and at least one actor must be active in the civilian sector. All participating parties can be companies. The goal of the call for proposals is to finance project with potential to contribute to innovation in the military area and at the same time strengthen Swedish competitiveness.
