Hi, and welcome to our second issue of 'One Health Updates'
In just a few weeks, we have already reached over 200 subscribers of our newsletter – a good start! We believe it is due to an interest and an understanding that animals, nature, and our health are interconnected and affect each other – what we call a One Health approach. And that difficult problems can only be solved with such an interdisciplinary approach. One man who early on had such thoughts is Sven-Erik Johansson, the farmer who, together with other Swedish farmers, joined forces because they had problems with their crops and were afraid that antibiotics could affect the diversity in the soil – talk about early One Health thinking! In this issue, we give you this historical look back at how the journey began towards what is now called the Swedish model, which is seen as an example of a restrictive use of antibiotics in Swedish agriculture. Also, meet our two hub coordinators, Paul in Alnarp and Aida in Umeå, and find a selection of interesting events and more. Last but not least, we also want to take the opportunity to thank you for this past term, as this will be our last newsletter before the summer. With that, we wish you a continued bright and pleasant May, and a relaxing summer and vacation when it arrives. SLU Future One Health had the opportunity to meet with Sven-Erik Johansson at Nibble Lantbruk AB in Västerås, who was one of the farmers involved in the process. | | | | | Meet our Hub Coordinators
SLU Future One Health is strengthening its presence on all our campuses in order to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations across faculties. Here we present our hub coordinators, who in their role work to develop SLU's capacity and potential in the area of One Health, as well as being the contact person for the platform on each Campus. | | | | | NOTE! Extended application deadline – there are still some places left for the Researcher residency2 days event: Researcher residency at Philipsonska garden in Strängnäs
The four Future Platforms invite senior as well as junior SLU researchers to join us for two days’ discussions on transdisciplinary research at Philipsonska gården in Strängnäs.
We will be focusing on transdisciplinary research on sustainability combined with forestry, food production, urban landscapes and one health.
The last application day is 22 June. Welcome to apply!
SLU research with a One Health perspective
Meet Ida Hallberg and Anders Glynn...both researchers at SLU! Ida has studied how highly fluorinated substances, known as PFAS, affect fertility and egg cells. Anders' research deals with chemical contamination of food and drinking water, human exposure, and health risk assessment. Watch the interview with Ida and Anders (in Swedish)! | | | Social service dogs plays an important role in physical and mental health Lena Lidfors' research develops methods for how school dogs can help students with problematic school absences to return to school and achieve learning goals. A webinar on the contribution of social service dogs to society and the procurement of dog teams was also organised in March .Photo: Vanja Sandgren | | | | | Relevant series on One Health and Global Health Security in the Lancet Following the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and the on-going global COVID-19 pandemic, the One Health approach has rapidly gained political and financial support, particularly in regional and transcontinental initiatives to improve Global Health Security. This four-paper Lancet Series explores the adoption of One Health approaches to improve health security.
New call for IDAThe NJ Faculty Board has decided to continue to support the
Interdisciplinary Academy (IDA) initiative and the further development of IDA.
A new call for the project period 2023-2024 is now open.
IDA is a programme at SLU where the university's
researchers are offered the opportunity to collaborate across disciplinary
boundaries on complex issues in the broad field of green transformation.
In April and May there will be
opportunities for Q&A sessions about IDA 2023-2024, match making events and
inspiration webinars The call closes 1 June 2023. | Foto: 925am / Shutterstock. | | | | | 'The One Health Breakfast Club'
Our aim with 'The One Health Breakfast Club' is to stimulate interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations, and thereby strengthen the One Health competence at SLU. We meet and greet on regularly basis, hopefully get some new insights and get inspired while having breakfast together. |
Join us next time when Alexija Neimanis from SVA, talks about "Learning Endings – a project across disciplines". See you there!
| | | | | | | | Cat and Dog Research in a One Health Perspective
The Small Animals Committee at the VH Faculty, in collaboration with the SLU One Health Platform brought together researchers from different areas – the aim was to clarify the complex interface between animal, human and ecosystem health, and to stimulate collaboration between several scientific disciplines. | | | | | New podcast about the future of meat Meat: the Four Futures
Over 30 voices from more than 10 countries around the world have been interviewed. You will be taken on a journey through four very different future scenarios: efficient meat 2.0, alternative 'meat', less meat, and plant-based 'no meat'. "I hope this series will bring some clarity to some important questions. First, what facts can we actually trust when it comes to livestock and meat production and consumption and its consequences? What do we actually have good evidence for and where do we need more research still? Why do people disagree on what the best solutions are, going forward, and why do people come to different conclusions?" Elin Röös, researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). | | | | | Climate Conversation: Communicating research for climate actionIf you missed our last webinar (in our series of Climate Conversation events) – you'll find a summary of it here, with take-home messages and a recording of the webinar, hosted by SLU Global and all four Future Platforms. | | | | | Bridging science and policy – from climate doomsday to an agenda of new opportunities This year’s first SLU Climate Conversation started with a kick-off at campus Ultuna with our invited guest – Johan Kuylenstierna, former chairman of the Climate Policy Council and director of the Stockholm Environment Institute, now director general of the research council Formas. The focus of Johan Kuylenstierna’s talk was the importance of the narrative when addressing the climate crisis and achieving action. Andrew Gallagher, hub coordinator for SLU Urban Futures at Ultuna, summarises the Johans talk in this article. | | | | | The photography exhibition An Eye for Science An eye for Science shows some concrete examples on how SLU takes on fundamental issues that affect all of us. The exhibition will be shown at some major events organized by SLU during 2023, such as events included in the official programme of Sweden's Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023, and to visitors, employees, and students at several of SLU's locations.

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. | | | | | | | SLU Future One Health – one of four Future Platforms at SLU
