SASNET Newsletter - March 2021 | |
Message from the DirectorDespite the ongoing pandemic, I am pleased to say that cooperation between Sweden and South Asia is still going very well. A great example is the visit of Sujata Patel, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, to Sweden after she was awarded the 2021 Kerstin Hesselgren visiting professorship. She will be hosted by the Department of Sociology, Umeå University, and co-hosted by SASNET, the Division of Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), Linköping University, and the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS), Umeå University. Don't miss her virtual inaugural lecture on 7 April. More information below. Sincerely, Andreas Johansson | | | | Andreas Johansson, Director, SASNET, Lund University | | | | | | | | | | | Inaugural lecture by Sujata Patel | Register now for Prof. Sujata Patel's virtual inaugural lectureOn Wednesday, 7 April 2021, from 10:15 to 12:00, Prof. Sujata Patel will hold a virtual inaugural lecture, marking the start of her 2021 Kerstin Hesselgren visiting professorship. The inaugural lecture, entitled 'Colonialism and Its Knowledges', addresses the ways in which the postcolonial, the decolonial and indigenous theories have contributed to the current sociological imagination. These differing conceptual frameworks have not only decentered contemporary western perspectives on modernity and social theory but reframed many of its key concepts such as class, race, caste, gender and nation; politics and identity; religiosities and ethnicities; culture(s) and languages. As a consequence, these viewpoints have also promoted the need for diverse approaches to the study of global modernities and affirmed the need comprehending these in distinct scales and varied geographies. To attend the lecture, please register in advance on Umeå University's website (scroll to the bottom). For more information about the event and Prof. Patel's visiting professorship, which is co-hosted by SASNET, please visit our website.
| Watch our recent seminar on queerness in South AsiaOn 3 March 2021, SASNET and the Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS) co-hosted an online seminar with Niranjan Kunwar, author of Nepal’s first queer memoir, Between Queens and the Cities, and Dr. Debanuj Dasgupta, Assistant Professor, Feminist Studies, at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The panelists discussed what it means to be queer in contemporary South Asia. After making historic legal gains, what does the LGBTIQ movement in Nepal look like two decades later? Watch the panel on the SASNET YouTube channel.
