Premiere for 'One Health Updates'
"Hello and welcome to the first issue of 'One Health Updates' from SLU Future One Health," says Susanna Sternberg Lewerin, program director for SLU Future One Health.
"Our ambition is to keep you updated on what is happening in the One Health
sphere, both at SLU, but also external activities of relevance, without claiming to cover everything. If you have any suggestions or information that you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to contact us," Susanna says. I wish you a pleasant reading! | | | | | Two new calls
For the moment we have two calls, one where you can apply for a post doc funded with 500 000 SEK per year and project, and one call with seed money funded with up to 100 000 SEK per application for activities such as pilot studies, feasibility studies, literature reviews, consortium meetings or consults. Most welcome with your application!
| | | | | Hussein Khalil, researcher at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and EnvironmentOne Health Day — a diversity of SLU research
Many of today's challenges require a range of solutions that can only be achieved through interdisciplinary collaborations between different fields of research. One Health Day brought together researchers, doctoral students and other stakeholders for a day in February at Ultuna.
Hussein Khalil was one of the speakers, and he talked about "Wild Animals as Disease Vectors". His research focuses on interdisciplinary and nature-based methods to improve health, particularly in urban environments with low incomes. Any highlights from the day?
"The diversity in One Health research at SLU is impressive, both in terms of the tools/disciplines involved, but also in terms of different study systems and geographic spread," says Hussain. | | | | | is a strategic platform for interdisciplinary research and collaborations that provides knowledge and solutions to good health and welfare for animals and people in sustainable ecosystems.
| | | | | New dissertation within One HealthWe congratulate Rortana Chea!
What is "the big idea" about your research?
"To reduce the risk of people contracting foodborne diseases," says Rortana.
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes that health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. | | | | | | | 'The One Health Breakfast Club'
Our aim with 'The One Health Breakfast Club' is to stimulate interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations, and thereby strengthen One Health competence at SLU. We meet and greet on regularly basis, hopefully get some new insights and get inspired while having breakfast together. |
Join us next time when professor Stefan Bertilsson will talk about The role of the aquatic microbiome in One Health. See you there!
| | | | | | | | Researcher residency at Philipsonska garden in Strängnäs | The four Future Platforms invite senior as well as junior SLU researchers to join us for two days’ discussions on transdisciplinary research at Philipsonska gården in Strängnäs. We will be focusing on transdisciplinary research on sustainability combined with forestry, food production, urban landscapes and one health. |

This special issue "Climate-Change Effects on the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and the Impacts on Northern Societies" clarifies the impacts of climate change on humans and animals among animal husbandry households, which are particularly exposed and sensitive to such changes, through the changed geographical distribution and epidemiology of Climate Sensitive Infections (CSI's). The authors aim at turning this new understanding into practical tools for decision-makers responsible for the development of northern societies, both by providing relevant data in an accessible form and by contributing to the development of an early warning system for increased risk of CSI spread at the local level.
