Message from the director
Starting off the new year with an exciting seminar program for the spring!
CMES continues to be closed until 31 March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we start off the new year with an exciting seminar program for the spring 2021. CMES program covers a broad range of topics ranging from the Arab Spring ten years on to the protection of refugees and environmental security in the Middle East. These topics are discussed by leading scholars and experts on the Middle East.
As announced, the first webinar in February is launched with Swedish Radio journalist Cecilia Uddén followed by two research seminars held by CMES scholars Spyros A. Sofos on his recently concluded PhD thesis on Turkish politics, and Orwa Ajjoub’s new report on Jihadi-Salafism. You are all warmly welcome to join the discussions!
Later in the spring, we hope to welcome new researchers to the house on Finngatan 16 and to kick-start new cutting-edge research projects. So stay tuned on CMES website and by subscribing to the Newsletter!
Keep safe and healthy!

Application of advanced machine learning algorithms to assess groundwater potential using remote sensing-derived data
The demand for water supply is continuously rising due to population growth and development across the world. In arid and semi-arid areas, particularly the Middle East, aquifers form the central freshwater reserves, hence are being uncontrollably exploited to meet water demand for an ever-increasing population and industrialization.

Scholars at Risk and Academic Freedom – four webinars spring 2021
Attacks on university staff and students occur with alarming frequency around the world. State and non-state actors perform these attacks, which not only hurt individuals and institutions but also undermines the integrity of higher educational systems.
Lund University is engaged in defending academic freedom and protecting vulnerable researchers through the membership in the Scholars at Risk network.
The first webinar – What is Scholars at Risk and how to get involved? – will describe what Scholars at Risk is and how Lund University is engaged. It will take place on 2 February at 12-13 and all staff members at LU are welcome to attend.
The University offers a broad range of activities that contribute to career development for academic staff, either within academia or outside it.
Some activities are suitable for doctoral students, some for postdocs and others for research team leaders. Registration is open for activities during spring term 2021.
The career development activities are offered in English, in Zoom/equivalent and are free of charge.
Read more about which activities we offer, when and how to register at Staff Pages.
