How can KTH and academia strengthen STEM education?
The Swedish government has launched a vital STEM strategy to secure the
country’s future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Declining PISA results and shrinking enrollment in science and technology
programs are two key challenges that highlight the urgency of this initiative.
The only way to reverse this trend is by increasing interest in STEM
subjects—and that starts early. A child’s curiosity about science and
technology is often shaped by their family, culture, and school environment.
Investing in education, culture, and teaching quality is not just about
creating more scientists and engineers—it’s about equipping future generations
with the skills to solve global challenges and drive Sweden forward.
Universities play a key role in this transformation. This is a challenge
that requires collaboration across academia, industry, and society. By working
together, we can ensure that Sweden remains at the forefront of innovation and
scientific excellence Read Sandra's blog post | | | Katharina Jochemko, Associate Professor in Mathematics | SCI Promotions:Get to know our new professors
Congratulations to your new role Katharina. You are now Associate Professor in Mathematics. How does it feel to be promoted? It feels great! I am very excited about this new chapter and look forward to new tasks and collaborations at KTH, and contributing to the broader scientific community. Can you describe your research? My research interests lie at the intersection of combinatorics and geometry. At the core of my research are polytopes and polyhedra. Examples of those are polygons in 2D or cubes and pyramids in 3D, but many interesting phenomena occur only in higher dimensions. Polyhedral structures arise naturally in many seemingly unrelated contexts, for example, counting questions in combinatorics but also classification tasks in machine learning. I study both questions about the combinatorics of polyhedra, such as "How many vertices, edges, 2-dimensional faces etc. does the polytope have?“, as well as questions about their metric properties, for instance, their volume. | | | Michael Fokine, Professor in Applied Physics | | Michael Fokine, Professor in Applied Physics | Congratulations, how does it feel to be promoted? Being promoted to the professor position is a wonderful and a very fulfilling milestone in my career. I am very happy that my narrow research focus was recognized and validated. I hope I will be able to fulfill all the expectations that this new role entails. I am very thrilled to take on that new task! Even though, it can seem like a culminative moment of my career, I still got so many research ideas that I am excited to test out!
Can you describe your research? My research interests lie at the intersection of materials science and optical engineering, driven by a lifelong passion for glass science. My focus centers on laser processing of glass and the fabrication of specialty optical fibers for a range ofapplications within photonics. In recent years, I have concentrated on advancing glass processing through additive manufacturing techniques, which led me to establish a spinoff company, Nobula 3D. Our company specializes in 3D printing of thin glass filaments using a novel Direct Glass Laser Deposition (DGLD™) technology. | | | | | | AI on aircraft can reduce risk of mid-air stalls and sudden drops Artificial intelligence aboard aircraft could help prevent mid-air stalls and terrifying drops in altitude. In a new study, an international research team successfully tested a machine learning system for preventing trouble with turbulence.
Researchers from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center conducted tests on an AI system designed to enhance the effectiveness of experimental technologies for manipulating airflow on wing surfaces. The results indicate that these innovations work better when paired with deep reinforcement learning (DRL), in which the program adapts to airflow dynamics based on previously learned experiences. On 1 April, KTH will change its travel agency service from Egencia to BIG Travel. Employees who are planning a business trip during the spring or need to adjust an existing booking should be aware of important dates related to the transition. KTH's sustainability goals have been a central part of the procurement of the new travel service. "
"Anyone booking a trip should be able to filter the travel options in the travel agency service and thus see how much carbon dioxide each airline emits and be able to choose the most environmentally friendly travel option," Magda Ousi, Travel Manager at KTH, says. Read more | | |
