Collaboration for SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic GrowthThe University of Gothenburg, as part of the International Association of Universities (IAU), has been asked to take a lead specifically on Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Every goal has its lead university, resulting in a global network of universities coordinating different goals. The University of Gothenburg has initiated a “SDG 8 Initiative”, coordinated by GMV, connecting the many nodes at the university who work with various issues within the broad spectrum included in SDG 8, such as centre formations, specific research projects and individual researchers, as well as associated partners in Sweden and internationally. The SDG 8 Initiative is now launching a webinar series starting in June and arranging a research conference in August. Read more below.

Seaspiracy: Researchers ReactNetflix´s documentary Seaspiracy has shocked the public, and brought attention to the devastating environmental and social impacts of industrial overfishing. But it has also sparked controversy, and been accused of muddying the waters around the question ´Is there such a thing as sustainable seafood?´. Watch, re-watch or listen to Seaspiracy: Researchers React with a panel of scientific experts discussing the documentary, providing an informed commentary and more clarity on some of the critical issues that Seaspiracy has brought to the surface. The Live podcast, held 25 May, was organized by the Student Sustainability Hub at GMV, Centre for Sea and Society, and Centre for Collective Action Research, CeCAR.

New material can protect against resistant bacteria
The World Health Organization describes antibiotic-resistant bacteria as one of the greatest threats to global health. To deal with the problem, there needs to be a shift in the way we use antibiotics, and new, sustainable medical technologies must be developed. Researchers at Chalmers, have developed a new material that prevents infections in wounds – a specially designed hydrogel, that works against all types of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant ones. The new material offers great hope for combating a growing global problem.

Call for projects: AI in energy and climate research
Data driven research is becoming increasingly important for many research activities at Chalmers. A large need also exists for research connected to energy transitions to meet climate targets. As new sources of data become available connected to energy and climate research there is potential for innovative research, but this does not come without related challenges. To extract valuable patterns from large data sets and handle the challenges, the Energy Area of Advance, CHAIR (Chalmers AI Research Centre), and ICT Area of Advance, issue this call.

Sales ban for “fossil cars" benefits the climate
If a ban were introduced on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, and they were replaced by electric cars, the result would be a great reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. That is the finding of new research from Chalmers, looking at emissions from the entire life cycle – from manufacture of electric cars and batteries, to electricity used for operation. However, the total effect of a phasing out of fossil-fuelled cars will not be felt until the middle of the century – and how the batteries are manufactured will affect the extent of the benefit.

New concept creates education across borders
The new concept Tracks at Chalmers consists of elective courses, and developments to the educational system and Chalmers' learning environments. The idea is that students will meet and collaborate across programme boundaries and take on relevant challenges with a basis in real-world problems together. It is one of the largest educational investments in Chalmers University of Technology's 190-year history.

Taking on the challenge of recycling textiles
Polyester is the most common synthetic fiber in the textile industry and is used in many products worldwide. A major challenge for the textile and fashion industry, however, is how to recycle polyester blends and other synthetic and soiled materials. A new project at Chalmers investigates thermochemical recycling of mixed synthetic textiles, in order to create new materials and fibers. The first tests bode well.
