| | | New Swedish investigation about chemicals in clothing and shoesThe Swedish government has decided to start an investigation to analyze and submit proposals on how a tax on harmful chemicals in clothes and shoes can be designed. The FRAM researcher Daniel Slunge will be part of the expert group. Read more
| New report about micro-debris from car tiresIn a new report produced for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency it is shown that micro-debris formed during the wear of car tires, is gathered in waters near cities and roads. The FRAM researcher Martin Hassellöv participated in the study. Read more. | Experts concerned about a non-toxic environmentOn the 21-22 February, the FRAM Centre held a workshop with invited international experts to share ideas on the topic of a non-toxic environment. Everybody agreed upon that a non-toxic environment is essential for the protection of human health and the environment. In this video we ask a few of the participants to give their individual view on the matter. See the video.
| Time to deal with the chemical cocktailThe City of Gothenburg, as well as the whole country, has defined environmental quality goals. One of these is Non-toxic Environment. But we do not reach the goal. Chemicals are necessary, but can at the same time lead to negative consequences for both people and the environment, writes four FRAM researchers at GT Debatt. The effects of risk based pesticide taxation in DenmarkHow you design taxes is very important to receive the wanted effect. Since Denmark mostly uses surface water as drinking water, a wise use of pesticides in farming is needed. Dr Anders Branth Pedersen and his colleagues from the department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University have studied the effects of risk based pesticide taxation in Denmark.
In this seminar he presents some of the results from their studies. Some of the conclusions are that pesticide taxes and strict approval systems are needed. But Dr Anders Branth Pedersen also asks for better European pesticide indicators. See the video.
| Risk to all or none? On the toxicity of microplastics. Is the toxicity of microplastics a risk to all or none? Listen to what Dr. Martin Wagner from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has to say about microplastics in this FRAM seminar, in collaboration with CeCar. See the video.
| New PhD course on "Risk, uncertainty and decision-making"In collaboration with the BECC MERGE research school ClimBECO, FRAM launces a new PhD course this autumn. The focus will be on theoretical perspectives and methods used in research on risk within different disciplines, with a thematic focus on risks from chemical mixtures. Last date to apply is 15 September. Read more.
| FRAM Seminar: Endocrine disrupting chemicals - a costly public health threat with opportunities for policy preventionLeonardo Trasande is the author of the highly acclaimed book "Sicker, Fatter, Poorer" and an internationally renowned leader in children´s environmental health. When he now comes to Sweden, we have the great pleasure to be able to offer this seminar with him. Save the date of 11 September at 10:30-12:00. Location still to be decided. Stay updated here.

Texts that caught our eye Here we highlight texts, from newspaper articles to scientific publications, that we find important for the debate on chemical impacts on human health and the environment.
1.IPBES Global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services provides a synthesis of the state of nature, ecosystems and nature´s contributions to people. Prepared by 150 leading international experts from 50 countries, from natural and social sciences, with additional contributions from a further 250 experts, working with the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), this Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services will inform better policies and actions in the coming decade(s).
2.Many of the world’s rivers are flush with dangerous levels of antibiotics, results from a massive survey of rivers across 72 countries, researchers found antibiotics at 66 percent of 711 sites sampled.
3. The Missing Piece – Chemicals in Circular Economy Todays chemicals legislations are not adapted for a sustainable circular economy, as many hazardous chemicals are unregulated and in widespread use. How will a circular economy work if no one wants to buy and use recycled materials?
4.Why is high persistence alone a major cause of concern? Regulation of highly persistent chemicals, for example by restriction of emissions, would not only be precautionary, but would serve to prevent poorly reversible future impacts.
