Assignment vs. volume: balancing faculty research funding in academia
How can academia ensure stable and efficient research funding for faculty? In her latest blog post Sandra Di Rocco explores the challenges of balancing internal research resources, such as FoFU, with faculty assignments to create a fair and sustainable funding model. Sandra highlights the importance of linking funding to actual faculty contributions, avoiding the fragmentation of resources, and ensuring transparency in allocation. She also discusses how a stable baseline of funding per faculty member is crucial for maintaining high-quality research, supporting Ph.D. education, and fostering long-term academic success. Curious about how SCI is addressing these challenges and planning for the future? Read the full blog post Download the SCI Reform Agenda for 2025 |

Milestone for lead-cooled reactors
Last week, Oskarshamn was the scene of an important step for nuclear power with the start of construction of an electrically heated prototype for a future nuclear reactor. The company Blykalla and KTH researcher Janne Wallenius, who is developing solutions for cooling reactors with lead instead of water, are among those behind the project. “One key focus is studying how lead can circulate naturally to cool the fuel rods under different accident scenarios. We’ll also be developing operational and maintenance processes, such as how to replace pumps and steam generators in molten lead at 350 degrees Celsius.", said Janne Wallenius.

From time to time, there are reports that some research is criticised not only for its content but also for its relevance. When the criticism comes from political representatives or certain special interests in society, it can be a sign of serious attempts to restrict academic freedom. When this happens, we must stand up for the right of research and researchers to freely define research questions and to freely publish and disseminate the results of their research.
