News from SLU Water Forum. We bring together water-related education, research and environmental monitoring and assessment at SLU. | |

It is about
time to sum up another spring, look ahead to summer with some holidays and then
an interesting autumn before 2023 is over. During the spring, as usual, a lot
has happened related to water at SLU. Among other things, we have arranged the
third internal water seminar, celebrated both World Water Day and World Oceans
Day, and ranked high for the global sustainability goal 14 (on oceans and
marine resources) in Times Higher Education's ranking of universities work with
Agenda 2030.
Three new
projects have been granted seed funding from SLU Water Forum and a whole bunch
of applications to Formas thematic calls on water have been submitted from
researchers at SLU. We now look forward to following the projects receiving seed
funding, and receive the evaluation of the submitted applications to Formas with
the hope of a good outcome for our water research. Read more about this and
more below.
Have a nice
summer and later a good start in the fall of 2023, Jens Olsson, coordinator SLU Water Forum
P.S. We
welcome suggestions on how we can keep SLU Water Forum up to date, interesting
and relevant, and how we can contribute to strengthening cooperation on water
at SLU. Do not hesitate in providing suggestions to water@slu.se. |

On the 20-21 March SLU
Water Forum arranged the third internal water seminar at
SLU. 16 younger researchers from three faculties gave
presentations for the approximately 60 persons joining in the seminar. Photo: Ulrika Jansson Klintberg | | | | | | | Seed-money within SLU Water Forum during 2023 |
Three projects were granted funding
within the call for seed-money from SLU Water Forum in 2023. The projects granted funding are led by: Cristián
Alarcón (Towards a rural-urban policy lab for water security, climate
adaptation and biodiversity in Uppland), Tomas Brodin (to
strengthen the links between chemical analysis, ecological effect and
mechanistic explanation for PFAS in marine apex predators), Malin
Olofsson (pilot project in relation to the new SLU center on algal toxins).

SLU is since spring part
in the Swedish hydropower center for new
technology and biodiversity, a competence
center for research on both the technical and environmental development of
Swedish hydropower. This increases SLU's ability to apply for funding for PhD-students
in the subject area. Contact Johan Östergren for more information.

In a new report from the AgriFood Economics Centre, of which SLU
is a part, proposals for new policy instruments for reduced eutrophication in
order to promote the growth of Swedish aquaculture are discussed. | | | | | SLU initiates a competence centre for toxic algal blooms
Together with SMHI and
the Swedish Food Agency, SLU has started a knowledge center with the aim of
gathering insights into toxic algal blooms. The initiative is financed by the
EU via the Swedish Board of Agriculture. Read more about the center here.

During the past few
years, SLU has submitted documentation for Times Higher Education's ranking of universities’
contributions to Agenda 2030. In 2022 it was the first time that SLU was
evaluated for SDG 14, oceans and marine resources. We are
happy to see that SLU reaches place 39 out of about 1600 universities in the ranking
for this goal. Read more about the ranking.
