The Role of Philanthropy in Sweden’s Research Future
This Friday marks the annual prize ceremony hosted by the Göran Gustafsson Foundation, one of Sweden’s most respected recognitions of early-career researchers from KTH and Uppsala University. Since its founding in the 1980s, the foundation has supported hundreds of scientists in fields like physics, chemistry, and medicine. This year alone, SEK 21.25 million will be awarded.
This is a powerful example of how philanthropy can make long-term contributions to science.
At the same time, the future of research cannot rest on philanthropy alone. If Sweden wants to stay a strong research nation, we must keep considering how to offer young researchers not only funding, but also the time, space, and trust they need to do meaningful work.

Zuheir Barsoum on the TekMek Research Days: The breadth of research areas enables valuable networkingIn May 2025, TekMek Research Days will bring together researchers and industry representatives to exchange knowledge, establish contacts and open up for new collaborations. By making the diversity of engineering mechanics visible, conditions are created for cross-border exchange of ideas and innovation. The initiative for TekMek Research Days grew out of a desire to clarify the extensive expertise that can be found within the Department of Engineering Mechanics at KTH. The aim is to provide a broader picture of the research field, and to highlight the potential for collaboration with industry and other societal actors. | New system to facilitate evaluation and analysis of courses
KTH has introduced a new system for course evaluation and course analysis aimed at reducing administrative work for teachers and making it easier for students to give feedback. The new system has been tested in pilot rounds during period 1 and 2 and is now fully launched on all KTH courses.
Mattias Höjer is Professor in Environmental strategies and futures studies, tested the system in autumn 2024 and has since
and conducted a course evaluation and a course analysis. He is pleasantly surprised and finds the new questionnaire significantly more useful than the previous one.

Interest in engineering is growing – but the funding cap is falling
Interest in engineering programmes remains stable. This year more than 4,700 people have chosen an engineering programme at KTH as their first choice, which is 18 percent more than two years ago. But we are facing a challenge – the government’s decision to reduce the ceiling in the coming years will affect the opportunities for many students to start their academic journey.
