Message from the director
Spring greetings from the team at the Centre for Advanced Middle East Studies!
Finally, spring has arrived to Lund and the surrounding garden of CMES is now covered by a beautiful flower bed of purple, orange crocuses and white snowdrops.
CMES continues to expand Middle East research at Lund University. We hope to receive many exciting project proposals and applications for CMES sabbatical autumn 2021. Please note that deadline is approaching on 30 April.
Coming up are also three open fully funded PhD positions with focus on comparative politics, water availability and demography in the Middle East.
While the pandemic are ongoing with signs of ”zoom fatigue”, CMES seminar series continues to attract a critical crowd of attendees thanks to the amazing speakers who present topics of high relevance to the Middle East. Coming up in April are two super interesting seminars on the challenges of developing democracy in the Middle East and on the recent Israeli elections. You are all warmly welcome to join the seminars and digital discussions.
Wishing you happy spring holidays!
Keep safe and healthy! Stay tuned on CMES website and by subscribing to the Middle East Forum Newsletter.

Open Calls
Researchers at Lund University are invited to apply to the following CMES calls. Deadline 30 April.
Virtual meetings a more equal space for women peace negotiators
During the pandemic mediators and conflict parties have had to interact, discuss and even negotiate via computer screens. Women negotiators have benefited from this and describe how they experienced the virtual medium as a more equal space since it is more difficult for men to dominate with body language and appearance, for example. This is described by Isabel Bramsen and Anine Hagemann in the article ”The Missing Sense of Peace. Diplomatic Approachment and Virtualization during the COVID-19 Lockdown”.
Mohammed Almahfali delivered a speech at the 44th UN Meeting, 46th Regular Session Human Rights Council
It was a debate under agenda Item: 9 - racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance, follow-up to and implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
