What kind of university do we want to be?We are living in a chaotic and uncertain time. The
world feels unstable, economically, socially, and politically, and the effects
of global developments are already reaching us. International policy changes and shifting
discussions have tangible impacts, especially concerning funding,
research priorities, and attitudes to academic freedom and equality.
In times like these, it's understandable to feel
uneasy or cautious. But moments like these also invite reflection. What kind of
university do we want to be in a world that is changing rapidly around us? Read Sandra's blog post | Information from the SCI Faculty Board | Fredrik Viklund, Photo: KTH | | Faculty renewal in focus
The most recent meeting of the SCI Faculty Board focused on the design of the faculty renewal plans to be developed by the departments. "A key topic was how exactly institutions should design their faculty renewal plans, as they will serve as an important tool for the Board", says Fredrik Viklund. The meeting also discussed clearer procedures for recruitment cases, which have become the responsibility of the Faculty Board since the turn of the year.

The Göran Gustafsson Prize for Young Researchers goes to...
Congratulations to SCI researchers Kathlén Kohn and Maciej Dendzik, who have been awarded the prestigious Göran Gustafsson Prize 2025. This prize honors outstanding young researchers in engineering physics and mathematics, with recipients receiving a total prize amount of SEK 3 million distributed over three years. "I am very excited to receive this year's Göran Gustafssons prize. One of my primary objectives is to develop an Algebraic Neural Network Theory. After several years of research, this theory is finally taking shape and seems to become an established approach to deep learning theory. The prize tremendously fosters this endeavor by enabling me to expand my team with the addition of a PhD student," says Kathlén Kohn.
Maciej Dendzik, who previously received the smaller Göran Gustafsson research grant in 2021, highlights the support for young scientists at crucial stages of their careers: “I am truly honored and delighted to be among this year’s recipients. This recognition greatly strengthens my motivation to push the boundaries of our understanding of quantum materials and provides essential support for advancing my independent line of research. Early-career scientists often face significant challenges, so awards specifically aimed at young researchers are an invaluable source of encouragement and support."
In addition to the main prize, the Göran Gustafsson Foundation awards a smaller research grant of SEK 1 million to promising early-career researchers in engineering physics and mathematics.
