Meet Kathlén Kohn, Associate Professor in MathematicsCongratulations on your appointment as associate professor! How does it feel to be promoted to your new role? I am super excited about the promotion. Our Department of Mathematics is really a great place to work, with the colleagues around me being strong mathematicians covering a diverse range of mathematics. After 5 years at the department as assistant professor, I am ready to take the next step and I am particularly looking forward to work with many more future PhD students and postdocs. Can you tell us about your research? I am an algebraic geometer working within data science and AI. On the one hand, I study the theoretical foundations of neural networks, in particular how changes in the architectural design of networks impact the optimization properties of network training. On the other hand, I investigate 3D reconstruction from images taken by unknown cameras, exploiting the geometry of complex camera models (such as moving rolling-shutter sensors) to find efficient algorithms. Finally, I have also worked on building a bridge between intersection theory and maximum likelihood estimation. |
One year with the Faculty Board - we have learnt to structure our work
It has now been a year since the SCI Faculty Board began its work. Much has happened during the year, responsibilities and mandates have become clearer. "We have learnt to structure the work so that simple decisions can be handled efficiently, while important and strategic discussions are given more space," says board member Outi Tammisola, reflecting on the past year.

Annual meeting for the Vehicle Engineering Program Collegium
On January 8, 25 participants
from the Vehicle Engineering 5-year program (Farkostteknik), including
teachers, master’s program coordinators, administrators, student
representatives, and school leadership, gathered for the annual development
meeting.
The discussions
focused on the long-term development of the program, particularly the need for
modernization in its structure, organization, and progression to tackle societal challenges such as electrification or
sustainability in transportation.
The group also explored ways to engage various
stakeholders in the program development through improved collaboration and enhanced student influence.
