Spring = Time to apply for funding
A sense of spring is in the air – depending on where you live, the snow has started to melt away, the birds welcome us with their singing and the much-needed light starts to return.
For some of us, spring also means a period of applications (hopefully receiving funding). And with that said, we want to remind you about our two open calls for funding. We also have a joint call for this year’s Researcher Residency together with our sister/Future Platforms.
As usual, our newsletter is filled with a selection of One Health research, we highlight two young researchers who recently defended their thesis and became doctors, and provide tips on upcoming events and more. Joyful reading! | Photo: Unsplash, Jack Blueberry | | | | | Two new dissertations within One Health Congrats to Tobias Klöffel and Tove Ortman! | What is "the big idea" about your research? "My research addresses the question of how climate is linked to the physical status of agricultural soils and how this affects important soil functions related to water such as water storage, drainage and water transport to plants. This is done with the overall aim to derive potential consequences of climate change. The research relates to One Health by providing answers to the question of how a changing climate may affect soil functions, which are essential for healthy life such as food production, flood regulation and groundwater recharge". | | What is "the big idea" about your research? "My PhD thesis was about how old types of cereals – so-called landraces – can be of interest for a future, more sustainable and robust food production. To overcome the challenges to farming posed by climate change and loss of biodiversity, there is a need to use a more diverse range of crops that can be more robust to environmental stresses, and these landraces seem to have traits that can help us improve food security. My work contributes to the broader One Health framework by addressing farm diversification in a changing climate, ultimately enhancing food security and promoting resilience". | | | | | | Calls for funding of One Health research 2024A friendly reminder! Application deadline: 22 March 2024.
Call 1: Write a report on One Health and the environment.
Call 2: Seed money to support One Health research proposals. Welcome with your application! | | | | | | | | Open call: Researcher residency at Philipssonska gården 20-21 August 2024For the third year in a row, SLU's Future Platforms invited SLU researchers to a research residency for discussions on interdisciplinary research. We will focus on the environment and sustainability in combination with forests, food, health and urban landscapes. Quote from Rosario, who attended the 2023 researcher residency: "It was quite an exercise to explain my research to colleagues from other fields and put it in the context of transdisciplinary research ideas. It was also interesting to learn how other colleagues think when they build new research ideas, which will surely inspire my future research applications," says Rosario Garcia Gil, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology. Participants from the 2023 research residency gathered on the grass in front of Philipssonska gården, where they bonded through a 'speed dating' exercise, getting to know each other better. | | | | | Apply for funding from SIANI-SLU Global |
The aim of this call is to support SLU researchers or other staffs to engage with SIANI-SLU Global and to communicate your research to broad audiences of academia and non-academia. Deadline for proposals: 22 March 2024! | | | | | Urban Health – Diverse perspectives on health in urban settingsHow can we understand the term Urban Healthscapes? SLU Urban Futures and SLU Future One Health teamed up in an Urban Health webinar, aiming to bring together diverse perspectives on health in urban settings. Did you miss our webinar? No worries, you can watch parts of the event here, when our keynote speakers present their reflections on urban health from their respective research fields. | Photo: Waldemar, Unsplash | | | | | African swine fever – pig farmers' views on government actionIn September 2023, the first case of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar was confirmed in Sweden. In response, the authorities initiated a control programme to eradicate the infection. The aim of the study presented here was to investigate how pig farmers perceived the information they received from the authorities in connection with the outbreak. | Photo: Jonas Malmsten, SLU | | | | |
A selection of One Health researchSLU conducts interdisciplinary research in the One Health area. Here we present a selection of research projects, publications as well as research results in the field. Highlights this time:
| | | | | Positive feedback in evaluation of Nordic climate researchThe joint Nordic interdisciplinary climate research project CLINF, led by Umeå University and SLU, has received excellent reviews from an international research committee of the Nordic Council of Ministers. | | | | | The One Health Breakfast Club |
Our aim with The One Health Breakfast Club is to stimulate interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations. We meet and greet on a regular basis, to hopefully gain some new insights and inspiration while having breakfast together. |
Join us next time when Igshaan Samuels, Global co-chair of the UN-declared International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 and Specialist Scientist on Rangeland Ecology and Pastoralism at the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa, talks about “The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists – Towards a global embrace to valuing rangelands and pastoralists and unlocking their full potential”.
The last sign-up day is 5 March. See you there!
