CMESNewsletter #39October/November 2023 | | | | Message From the DirectorSince the devastating 7 October Hamas attack on Israeli civilians and the unfolding catastrophic war for Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, CMES researchers have responded to the never-ending requests for in-depth analyses from the media and the general public as well as internally among students and staff at Lund University. I am impressed by how swiftly our staff mobilised during these extremely challenging times, offering a broad range of perspectives based on their areas of expertise. CMES is arranging a public academic panel on 15 December to discuss the war and its consequences. The Lund University Vice-Chancellor will also be present. During the spring semester of 2024, CMES is planning a series of seminars and events related to the war. For the latest updates of our activities, articles, podcasts, online events, etc, please visit the website. The CMES staff continues to expand. The latest strategic recruitment is a tenure track position in Islamic studies and five postdoctoral fellows to be embedded in ongoing research projects of the Strategic Research Area (SRA) The Middle East in the Contemporary World. CMES is also offering Lund University students internships starting in early 2024. CMES recently hosted an Arabic lunch for students and staff, and continues to offer Arabic language courses during the spring semester for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. Coming up before the end of the semester is one last CMES research seminar on green growth hegemony in Turkey. Finally, CMES is very excited now to be one of three participating institutions at Lund University as part of the world’s second United Nations University hub focused on water. | Karin AggestamCMES Director and MECW Coordinator
