CMESNewsletter #23October 2021 | | | | Message from the DirectorGearing up on societal outreach and public events!CMES is now able to gear up on societal outreach and public events due to the easing of Covid-restrictions. As part of Lund University’s Future Week, CMES organized a panel on trendspotting in the Middle East at the Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art. The scholars provided cutting edge forecasting of major trends in the Middle East and responded to several insightful questions posed by an enthusiastic and engaged audience. In addition, the Swedish Minister of EU Affairs Hans Dahlgren recently visited Lund University and received a briefing by CMES on the challenges to democratization in the Middle East. Finally, the hybrid format of CMES seminar series is facilitating both physical and virtual presence open for all in Lund and beyond! Coming up in November is a series of workshops organized jointly by a number of Strategies Research Areas (SRA) at Lund University on clean energy, and on societal and environmental impacts across contexts. Two topical CMES seminars are also held, one on digital communication in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the other on artificial intelligence and dust-storm control in the Middle East. Please also note the open call for three writing retreats at CMES in the spring 2022. Sadegh Jamali (Technology and Society, LTH Lund University) and Hakim Abdi (Centre for Environmental and Climate Science, CEC Lund University) have received seed funding from CMES to initiate research and prepare an application for national and international research calls. There is a large gap in Middle East research that is caused by the lack of a detailed and up-to-date Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) map of the region. Therefore, the overall objective of Sadegh and Hakim's project is
to fill this gap through the development of a LULC dataset using a repeatable
ML-based framework with the large pool of readily available EO data. The CMES research initiation funding is thus for a project on High-Resolution Mapping of the Middle East using satellite observations from Sentinel missions in a machine learning framework (HiMMEL). | | | | November 15: SDG 7 Affordable and Clean EnergyStrategic Research Area (SRA) Workshop about access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, arranged by the SRAs NanoLund, ELLIIT and BECC.
