Summer is here, and the holidays are just around the corner. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been in contact with us during this semester. Together, we have shared insights and had fruitful discussions around
interdisciplinary
research
and One Health to raise awareness of how our common health is connected – and how we can continue the work ahead. We can already announce some of our initiatives this autumn – Save the Date for One Health Day (15 Oct) and Soil Health Day (4 Dec).
Another example of networking activities to stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations at SLU is our series of events, The One Health Breakfast Club, where about 400 SLU colleagues have participated since the start in autumn 2022 (more info below).
As usual, we present a selection of One Health research, spotlighting three young researchers who recently defended their thesis and became doctors. Additionally, you get some tips on upcoming events.
We wish you all a nice and relaxing summer – see you next semester.
Enjoy your reading!

New dissertations within One Health
Congrats to Carl Lehto, Kristina Berggren Nieto and Mark Wales!
What is your research about?
"I study what characteristics of landscapes make them more or less preferable for outdoor recreation. Outdoor recreation has been directly linked to health and well-being of people, with increased time spent in natural environments leading to many positive outcomes".
"In my research, we look at new plant protection methods that focus on how we can use a plant’s own defence system to our favour. Since this way of protecting plants stems from the plant itself, these methods can potentially be more sustainable and environmentally friendly than chemical pesticides, which often negatively impact the environment and people’s health".
"My research sheds light on the important role of outdoor life in adolescent well-being. It aligns with the One Health approach by highlighting the interconnectedness between adolescent well-being and the quality of their everyday outdoor environments, including green and natural environments".
Panel discussion: Biodiversity loss – a threat to our health
Did you miss our interesting panel discussion on 22 May on the link between biodiversity and One Health?
What is the role of authorities, municipalities and other actors? Who is responsible for the protection of biodiversity from a social and health perspective?
You can watch the recorded discussion via the button below (in Swedish).
In line with our panel discussion, we highlight an interesting report from the EU Commission: Biodiversity and health.
The mystery of heart muscle disease – can cats help us find some answers?
Cats, like humans, suffer from the serious heart muscle disease called cardiomyopathy.
Meet Åsa Ohlsson, who has been assigned to further investigate why certain animals are affected by cardiomyopathy – and whether the same genetic causal relationship applies to (and can be translated to) humans.
The project has just started, and three exciting years lie ahead. Perhaps the discoveries will contribute to future changes in medicine and help save the lives of those affected - cats and humans alike.
SLU conducts interdisciplinary research in the One Health area. Here we present a selection of research projects, publications, as well as research results in the field.
(Primarily in English, Swedish if the content is not available in English).
Some other highlights with interesting reports, books and articles on cross-cutting themes that bring together different aspects of One Health. (Swedish and English mixed)

As part of the SASUF innovation week, Stefan Bertilsson and Anna Székely from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), together with Carlos Bezuidenhout from North-West University (NWU), and Sanna Koskiniemi from Uppsala University, held a workshop titled "Navigating the OneHealth landscape with the lens of microbial ecology".
‘The One Health Breakfast Club’ takes a summer break – see you all in September!
Around 400 SLU colleagues have participated in ‘The One Health Breakfast Club’ since the start of autumn 2022 – eating breakfast, having interdisciplinary discussions and meeting both familiar and new faces.
There will be a kick-off for the next series of events in September. Keep an eye out for our invitations in your email or check our calendar.
You are most welcome to eat waffles and network with colleagues!
