2024 – a new year with opportunities to strengthen the One Health approach to solve complex challenges
In this newsletter, we highlight a selection of One Health research, announce
two new open calls for funding, tell you about two colleagues who have recently defended their thesis and become doctors, as well as tips on upcoming events and more. We also want to advertise our PhD course in One Health: concept, cases and methodology – the deadline for applications is 19 February (more info below). Joyful reading! | Photo: The image above was from our networking breakfast in November at Green Innovation Park at SLU Ultuna, when Karin Eklöf (researcher at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment ) gave us an inspirational talk about Wetland restoration – challenges, scientific knowledge and research gaps. | | | | | Calls for funding of One Health research 2024The application is now open!
Call 1: Write a report on One Health and the environment.
Call 2: Seed money to support One Health research proposals. Most welcome with your application! | | | | | | | | Two new dissertations within One Health Congrats to Karin Amsten and Eliyan Chea! | What is "the big idea" about your research? "My research had focused on the effect of grazing by large herbivores and fire on the vegetation in an open ecosystem. These are two natural processes that have disappeared from the modern landscape and this has a large impact on many species that are important for ecosystem services, such as pollination". | | What is "the big idea" about your research? "My research aimed to support faecal sludge management planning at a city-wide scale in low- and middle-income countries. This was done by analyzing the potential for resource recovery from the faecal sludge generated by the waterborne system. ". | | | | | | 20-21 August 2024: Researcher residency at Philipssonska gården – Save the date! For the third year in a row, SLU's Future Platforms invited SLU researchers to a research residency for discussions on interdisciplinary research. The focus was on the environment and sustainability in combination with forests, food, health and urban landscapes. A call will be announced in a couple of weeks – keep an eye out! | | | | | New Policy Brief: The loss of Biological Diversity threatens our health! This policy brief highlights the need for extensive changes in policies and practices among authorities, stakeholders and other key actors, and to agree on common goals and actions. It outlines three clear recommendations, necessary to fulfil the objectives of the new global biodiversity framework adopted by the CBD in Montreal in December 2022. | | | | | | Antimicrobial resistance in the environment – why is it important to explore?
Listen to Foon Yin Lai, Paul Löffler and Valentina Ugolini, all from the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment at SLU, explaining antimicrobial resistance in the water environment and how their research contributes to a healthier future. | Urban Health – Diverse perspectives on health in urban settingsHow can we understand the term Urban Healthscapes? SLU Urban Futures and SLU Future One Health teamed up in an Urban Health webinar, aiming to bring together diverse perspectives on health in urban settings.
Did you miss our webinar? No worries, you can watch parts of the event here, when our keynote speakers present their reflections on urban health from their respective research fields. | | | | | | Open environmental monitoring data - a gold mine!
How can research can be improved using data from SLU's environmental monitoring and assessment (EMA)? That was the topic of a well-attended workshop that SLU Future One Health together with SLU Data Management Support organised in December. “It is gratifying that so many of SLU’s researchers are curious to learn more about EMA at SLU – what data is available, and how it can be used in their research, and we are now considering how to take these insights further in 2024 and beyond”, says Mikaela Asplund is coordinator and responsible for Environmental Data Support.

A selection of One Health researchSLU conducts interdisciplinary research in the One Health area. Here we present a selection of research projects, publications as well as research results in the field. Highlights this time:
| | | | | The One Health Breakfast Club |
Our aim with The One Health Breakfast Club is to stimulate interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations. We meet and greet on a regular basis, to hopefully gain some new insights and inspiration while having breakfast together. |
Join us next time when Henrik Lerner, Senior lecturer at the Department of Health Care Sciences at Marie Cederschiöld University, talks about “An ethicist’s view of One Health”.
NOTE: The last sign-up day is today! See you there!
| | | | | | PhD course in One Health: concept, cases and methodology, 3 credits
NOTE! The last day to sign up is 19 February!
|
We will give a theoretical overview of what the One Health concept is, and why a One Health approach is necessary to provide efficient solutions to the global challenges of our time. We will describe the benefits (and drawbacks) of transdisciplinary research and how transdisciplinarity is used in this context. If you have any questions – please contact the course coordinator Elisabeth Rajala ( elisabeth.rajala@slu.se). | | | | | | The One Health Breakfast Club |
