Register for the 2026 Bath Conference |
Registration for the 2026 Bath Conference on Earth System Governance is open. Early‑bird rates are available until 15 May. We encourage you to register as soon as possible and to consult the preliminary conference programme using the links below. For all early career researchers, the Early Career Day programme is now available. | International Panel on Earth System Governance |
In 2026, the Earth System Governance Project launched a major new initiative: the International Panel on Earth System Governance (IPESG). IPESG is a new science-based institution to conduct large-scale, systematic assessments of the state of research on earth system governance, bringing together hundreds of scholars from around the world. An open call for participation will be issued in May 2026 through the Earth System Governance Project. The panel is chaired by Prof. Frank Biermann and managed by Max van Deursen at the University of Utrecht. To kick-start the process, a session at the Meeting Day during the 2026 Bath Conference on Earth System Governance will explore ‘Climate Governance in 2030’. Global climate governance has entered a fraught era – the ESG community must re-evaluate contexts that have changed since the 2015 Paris Agreement and seek opportunities to maintain a green transition. We will conduct a deliberative future-scanning exercise to scope (i) contexts and issues that will shape global climate governance in an era of heightened geopolitical tensions, and (ii) avenues through which the scholarship and activism of the Earth System Governance community can respond. We aim towards a 2027-2028 journal Special Issue on emerging challenges and opportunities for climate governance. We invite you to save the date (11 September) and join the taskforce → From the Climate Governance Taskforce conveners, Valeria Zambianchi, Milena Niesen, Kennedy Mbeva and Sean Low
