Internal news from the Department of Aquatic Resources |
| | | | Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua)Newsletter April 2024 | | | | | | | | |
Hi!
You are about to read SLU Aqua's first
newsletter. Many interesting things are happening at the department, and that
is why a newsletter is a positive thing and helps us communicate about all the
exciting things we do. Here you can read more about our newest employees and get
the latest knowledge from our projects. You can also read about the
visitors who come to SLU Aqua to be with us for a limited time. Why not take
the opportunity to meet these people, and maybe apply for money to visit their
university or institute and bring back new experiences to our department.
SLU Aqua is a big department and we run a very
large externally funded operation. As much as 93% of what we do is financed
by external funds, which in 2023 amounted to SEK 275 million. Managing an operation
that is externally funded requires a lot of work in the form of applications, agreements
and reporting. With such a large external funding, we can compete with
Swedish universities and colleges. For example, we are larger than
Mid Sweden University and the colleges in Borås, Halmstad, Dalarna, Väst,
Blekinge, Gävle, Skövde and Kristianstad. Together we do a fantastic job and we should really
be proud of that.

Wishing you a pleasant read and a nice spring! /Noél Holmgren, Head of Department.

Hello there Joana Reis Vasconcelos
Joana is
a visiting researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).
She is currently working on otolith shape analysis on cod at the Institute of Coastal Research in Öregrund. She photographs cod otoliths from the Baltic Sea from
time periods of different levels of hypoxia to examine if the otoliths change
shape due to the increasing lack of oxygen in the Baltic Sea. Joana is staying
at SLU Aqua until May 4th.

opportunity has been made possible by the Erasmus+ program of the EU.

Article with SLU Aqua involvement published in NatureCongratulations to Christopher Griffiths who recently had an article published in the well-known journal Nature, entitled "Revealing uncertainty in the status of biodiversity change". – This paper has been one hell of an effort by Tom and
the team, taking several years and numerous rounds of review. The reason for
