CMESNewsletter #41January 2024 | | | | Photo: Linda Eitrem Holmgren | Message From the DirectorStarting out the new year, CMES has been engaged in several societal outreach activities. Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war and with the escalation of violence in the Middle East, the Centre has scaled up with public seminars. Two public lectures were held in mid-January with senior Middle East correspondent Cecilia Uddén, Radio Sweden. The lectures, which attracted large audiences of students, researchers, and others, were co-organised with the Student Association of Foreign Affairs (UPF), the Graduate School, and the Department of Political Science. The week after a “Rapid Response Seminar” was co-organised with the Faculty of Law on South Africa’s filed claim at the International Court of Justice on the allegation of Israel committing genocide in Gaza. Many more seminars are scheduled for the spring so stay tuned on CMES website and calendar! Two major events also took place in January, one when French President Emmanuel Macron visited Lund University. Moreover, a well-deserved Honorary Doctorate at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lund University was awarded to Samir Abu Eid, Middle East correspondent for Swedish Television. Finally, CMES is thrilled and excited with the new incoming researchers joining us this spring. Dr Hebatalla Taha has just started up her tenure track position in political science. Trial lectures for the tenure track position in Islamic studies have been held this week and a decision will soon be reached on that appointment. Later in the spring, two new post-docs are joining CMES staff together with two Lund University scholars on writing retreats.

Israel at the International Court of JusticeOn 29 January, Professor David Kaye (Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Public International Law) held a rapid response seminar on the ICJ case between South Africa and Israel. In the seminar, David gave a brief overview of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the ICJ and what South Africa argued in their case. He also discussed the provisional measures sought by South Africa and the order published by the ICJ as a response, including ordering Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide, punish incitement to genocide and enable provision of humanitarian assistance in Gaza. | | | | Source: Wikimedia Commons | | | | Anna Karin Eneström and Karin Aggestam | | | | Turkey Beyond Borders ConferenceCMES researcher Pinar Dinc organised a workshop at the Mediterranean Museum in Stockholm as part of her ongoing project Turkey Beyond Borders: Critical Voices, New Perspectives which is funded by the Swedish Institute and housed at CMES.
