A new academic year

A new academic year has begun, and we now have students in all three years of the new bachelor's programs! The interest among international students remains strong for our master's programs, and we look forward to next year when, for the first time, we will have "pure" master's programs – as bachelor's program students transition to master's programs, unless they choose to enter the job market directly.

So, we are approaching the end of the transition that has been ongoing for many years, thanks to many dedicated and committed staff members. Now, the ongoing work of refining programs and courses awaits. In addition, the ongoing efforts to promote and market our educational offerings will intensify, including a greater regional and program-specific focus. We hope for the same wonderful commitment in this important and exciting work.

Young forest and bioenergy biomass - potential and technology for small tree harvest

Small-diameter trees from early thinning can be a source of energy biomass. But are conventional forest management systems and technology cost-efficient and sustainable enough for the utilization of small-diameter trees?

Unique education collaboration with Wageningen

The agreement applies for the Forest and Landscape Bachelor’s programme at SLU and Forest and Nature Conservation vid Wageningen University. Helena Mellqvist and Karin Hjelm, both programme directors of studies explain, ‘We are excited that we will be able to strengthen the range of courses offered under the agreement. The collaboration and double degree agreement will result in students with unique future skills.’

Let's talk science! Can biological diversity be measured?

The habitat of many forest species has deteriorated or has been drastically reduced. Society's goal is to preserve or even increase forest biodiversity, but what do we actually use to measure biodiversity? Can biodiversity be measured?

Recordhigh interest in the world congress

With over 5000 scientific abstracts submitted the 26th IUFRO World Congress is the most anticipated congress in the history of the IUFRO.“We are thrilled to see so many abstracts! This makes us very confident that the congress will offer a high-quality scientific program and become a great success”, says Dr. Elena Paoletti, Chair of the Scientific Committee.

With less than one year to go until the opening of the 26th World Congress next June, an all-time high of 5 014 abstracts have been submitted. The abstracts constitute the scientific basis of the congress, and the Scientific Committee will now review and evaluate every single abstract and finally decide which abstracts qualify for an oral or poster presentation.

“It is a lot of work, of course, but at the same time it is truly inspiring to read about what is going on in the world of forest research and select which abstracts are the most interesting and of the highest quality,” says Professor Björn Hånell of SLU, Sweden, member of the Scientific Committee.

Getting our Cities Right – From Green Infrastructure to Urban Forestscapes

Urban forestscapes and the intricate connections between forests, cities and people from an interdisciplinary perspective was the focus of the third conference in the series Getting our Cities Right. The conference was arranged in Umeå by SLU Urban Futures in june 2023. Key insights and summaries from the conference are now available on our webpage.

Forest Social: Forest Sami and Sami forests – 25 October 2023

At this lecture, Gudrun Norstedt, research fellow at the Várdduo Center for Sami Research, Umeå University, will present her research. SLU Future Forest welcome students from both SLU and Umeå University for this lecture. The lecture will be held in English and starts at 13:30 in Utsikten at SLU Umeå.

Researcher workshop (networking lunch) – 8 November, 2023

The SLU Future Forest invites researchers from SLU campuses, Umeå University and Skogfors for the workshop “Green dreams and workforce realities - Swedish forests and forest labour” accompanied with lunch. The workshop will focus on interdisciplinary research and discussions on forests and forest labour in Sweden. This engaging event will take place both at Campus Ultuna and online in English from 11:00 to 13:00.

SLU's researchers, teachers and other staff, and SLU's students are invited to attend SLU's Agenda 2030-day to discuss how the development towards the Global Goals for Sustainable Development has gone so far, how SLU has contributed, and how we can strengthen our contribution ahead.

Excursion in Gällivare

The Future Forest’s last month excursion was in Gällivare. The excursion's theme, "adapted forest measures for the creation of functional reindeer pastures and ecological compensation,” was addressed from diverse perspectives of different parties connected to Norrbotten forestry.
