25 years of collaboration within the life cycle field
The Swedish Life Cycle Center has since 1996 brought together Swedish life cycle competence and front-running organizations. It has been instrumental in developing and adopting life cycle approaches in the Swedish society, whilst making important contributions to international initiatives. And in 2022 we continue our 25-year long journey of collaboration and mutual learning with over 500 professionals among our partner network.
The life cycle perspective is being integrated in all levels in the society, from customer demands to new business models and in legislations. The need and demand for both life cycle information and life cycle competence continue to increase. So after 25 years, the Swedish Life Cycle Center and the life cycle community have an important role to play. A journey that you are an important part of.
This spring our Scientific director, Greg Peters, has developed a new research strategy to strengthen the Swedish Life Cycle Center’s scientific credibility and profile. This work has been done together with the Center’s Academy group and researchers at the Research institutes and was approved by the Board on May 24.
We, the Technical secretariat, are now in the planning process of launching “Life Cycle Talks”, a series of talks presenting the research front to keep you up to date with the science and application of the life cycle perspective.
In this newsletter you will get the opportunity to get to know some of our work and life cycle news!

The life cycle perspective as driving force for continued partnership – It is incredibly important to have a holistic view when working with sustainability. And the life cycle perspective is crucial for achieving our sustainability goals as a society, organization or company, says Lars Mårtensson, Chairman of the Swedish Life Cycle Center Board and Director environment and innovation at Volvo Trucks.
The Swedish Life Cycle Center plays an important role for all its actors within the Center to build networks, competence and influence future development. How the partnership is used is up to the partner. Some partners value the direct contact to the network and research. Others are engaged in expert groups that go in line with their organization’s agenda. And for some organizations, Swedish Life Cycle Center has been and is a key to their continuous work with life cycle related improvements.
Have a look at our Operational plan for stage 10 (2022-2024) if you are curious in what we are doing.
| Two days diploma course with a focus on Applied Life Cycle ThinkingGetting in depth knowledge in life cycle thinking and life cycle assessment as well as understanding how to apply the life cycle approaches in daily operations. These were the main focus points for the participants during the training in Applied Life Cycle Thinking. | | | | In depth knowledge about Swedish Life Cycle Center during 2021During 2021 we have, among other things, developed a joint application to the Swedish Energy Agency for a new Center of Excellence within the life cycle field, dived into the methodology and application of Product Environmental Footprint, appointed a Scientific director and have entered new partnerships with Electrolux and Polestar. If you are interested in knowing more about what Swedish Life Cycle Center did last year, please read our Annual Report. | | | | Scientific Directions Update #3The scientific directions updates are brief scientific news updates which Greg Peters, the Swedish Life Cycle Center’s Scientific Director, writes. Welcome to the first Life Cycle Talks! Life Cycle
Talks are a series of talks that will present the research front to keep you up
to date with the science and application of the life cycle perspective. For our
first talk we have invited Henrikke Baumann, Professor in Industrial and
Domestic Ecologies at Chalmers University of Technology. She will introduce us

development and innovation of sustainable business models.
| | | | New opportunity for SMEsThe life cycle perspective, understanding the environmental impacts of a product or service throughout the value chain, is gaining increased importance in business as well as in public sector and authorities. Upcoming legislation and legislative proposals, such as the climate declarations for buildings or EU Environmental Footprint, puts an increased pressure on all companies to implement and understand the life cycle perspective.
Meeting this increased demand, Swedish Life Cycle Center has opened up for small and medium sized companies to take a more active part in the Center’s activities. Read more about the opportunities and about out the first SME, Greendesk AB, to join the center in the linked news article. We are looking forward to welcoming new organizations to the center!

Video Lecture: Thirty years of research on Life Cycle Assessment
25 years ago, Swedish Life
Cycle Center started its journey. A journey built on a common need between
academia, industry, research institutes and government agencies – with the aim
to make better and more sustainable products.
Anne-Marie Tillman is
Professor Emerita at the Division of Environmental Systems Analysis at Chalmers
and one of the founders of the Swedish Life Cycle Center. Her research has
included methodology development and application of life cycle assessment (LCA)
and related environmental systems analysis tools. Here you get the chance to
take part of a lecture which summarizes thirty years of research on Life Cycle
Assessment, at her retirement from Chalmers.
-
Mutual learning has been
extensive. We, the LCA experts, have been able to conduct assessment studies
with a quality we would never have been able to achieve on our own. And the
technology experts on the other hand, have learned about the systemic lifecycle
implications of their choices in technology development.
| Life Cycle Summer School 2022, in GothenburgForum for sustainability through life cycle innovation (FSLCI) organizes a yearly summer school. This year the school will look at how life cycle methodologies can contribute to achieving the objectives of major global climate agreements and other sustainability issues on a regional level, through focus on prevention, circularity and adaptation. The Summer School will take place from 25th – 28th of August 2022 in Gothenburg, Sweden. | | | |
