CMESNewsletter #35April 2023 | | | | Message From the DirectorOpen CMES calls for travel grants and workshops! While the spring semester is soon coming to an end at Lund University, CMES is still busy with a broad range of activities. At the end of April, CMES organised a festive celebration ceremony for the students who successfully completed CMES Arabic Language Courses. An international workshop will be held next week on the theme “Israel at the Crossroads: Democratic Backsliding and Elusive Peace.” Leading national and international scholars in the field will be attending, including a keynote speech delivered by the well-known Swedish journalist and author Göran Rosenberg. Two highly topical research seminars are also held during the month of May on the prospects of democracy in Iran and droughts in Syria and Iraq. In addition, CMES is participating in several outreach activities. We are organising two highly topical panels in Almedalen this summer on climate change in the Middle East and on the ongoing political protests in Israel. CMES is also participating with several panels at the second annual conference of the Swedish Middle East North Africa Network (SWEMENA) hosted by Stockholm University in late August. Finally please note that CMES has a number of calls out for workshop proposals and travel grants. CMES looks forward to receiving many exciting proposals! There will also be more calls coming soon for a tenure track position in Islamic studies and new post-doc positions.
So stay tuned on the CMES website, social media and by subscribing to the Newsletter. | Karin AggestamCMES Director and MECW Coordinator
