CMESNewsletter #25January/February 2022 | | | | Message from the DirectorStarting off the new year with exciting seminars, an open call for project proposals and planning for Almedalen! CMES set off the new year of 2022 by launching the spring seminar program that covers a broad range of topics. First out was a seminar on revolution and counterrevolution in the Middle East and North Africa with scholars from Europe, Canada and the Middle East presenting their recent publications. The next seminar was held by Barzoo Eliassi, Linnaeus University, on his recently published book on Narratives of Statelessness and Political Otherness: Kurdish and Palestinian Experiences. Do not miss the upcoming exciting seminars in March on Gender and techno-Islam in Saudi politics; UN agencies in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and Creativity of Swedish Muslim Art Creators. CMES is also in the midst of planning several other activities this spring. A CMES Call for project proposals is now open. "Almedalsveckan" will be resumed in July after two years of pandemic restrictions. Lund University has selected ”Democracy” as an overarching theme of its program and CMES is contributing two panels on the Middle East, consisting of academics, practitioners and civil society organizations. There is also a new date, 18 May, for "CMES Open House", which unfortunately was postponed in December due to the pandemic. With spring around the corner, the removal of most Covid-restrictions and with the first sign of snowdrops in our fantastic garden at Finngatan 16, we are all energized and look forward to many exciting research activities at CMES this spring! So stay tuned on CMES website, social media and by subscribing to the Newsletter! | Karin AggestamCMES Director and MECW Coordinator
