CMESNewsletter #37August 2023 | | | | Message From the DirectorReturning from a well-deserved summer vacation, the CMES staff gathered in the small beautiful village of Arild for a kick-off meeting to discuss ongoing and upcoming research activities. Later that week, the Swedish Middle East and North Africa Network (SWEMENA) held its second annual conference at Stockholm University with many CMES researchers presenting their cutting-edge research. Next year, CMES will be hosting the third annual conference of SWEMENA. During this first week of the autumn semester, the Centre held a successful launch of the third MECW project: ECO-Syria: Exploring conflict-environment interactions of sustainable development and conservation. A second issue of CMES new outreach series Regional Outlook was also published. It provides an insightful analysis of the regional reactions to the Qur'an burnings in Sweden. CMES also announced a new PhD course on Environment and Sustainable Development in the MENA region. The CMES seminar series is now in full swing. As seen below, it includes a broad range of exciting and diverse topics ranging from economic diversification and green transition in the Gulf states to radio and state power in North Africa. CMES staff continues to expand. This autumn, we warmly welcome Dalia Dassa Kaye as a visiting Fulbright Schuman scholar who will spend the academic year 2023-24 at CMES. The tenure track position in Islamic Studies received an impressive number (60) of applicants and we hope to have that position filled soon! Finally, do not miss next week’s Open House at CMES for students and researchers at Lund University. Come and mingle with CMES scholars and receive information about the Arabic language courses offered at CMES. Arabic snacks and sweets will be served as well as ripe apples harvested in CMES wonderful garden! For the latest stay tuned on CMES website, social media and by subscribing to the Newsletter!
