Located in the Botanical Garden in Uppsala, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS)
is a national institute for advanced study. For the academic year 2027-28 the
Collegium offers residential fellowships for senior and early-career scholars
from all countries. The fellowships give fellows the opportunity to concentrate
on their own research interests,
free from the teaching and administrative duties of ordinary university life.
Fellows are, however, expected to be active members of the Collegium’s
scholarly community and to participate in seminars and other academic events
outside their own fields of specialization. Scholars may apply for a full
academic year (September – June) or one semester. The available programmes are:
The General Fellowship Programme
Open to scholars mainly in the humanities and social
sciences, this programme is the backbone of the Collegium’s fellowship
programmes. Scholars from diverse backgrounds, institutions, and countries are encouraged
to apply.
The Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme
This programme is open
to scholars from across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, with
an emphasis on research on cultural and social diversity, cultural heritage and
creativity, societal structures and public resistance, and varieties of
cultural expressions in local and global perspective.
The Human Past Fellowship Programme
This programme aims to attract fellows pursuing research on
different aspects of the human past, combining methods and materials from
different disciplines. Its primary focus is on research work relating to three
major migration events: The Indo-European-, Bantu- and Austronesian expansions.
Fellows may come from a wide range of disciplines, such as archaeology, genetics and linguistics.
The SCAS-VUIAS Fellowship Programme
This programme is open to Ukrainian scholars - mainly in the
humanities and social sciences - who are affiliated with a
Ukrainian academic institution and are usually based in Ukraine.
