Spring seems
to be in the air, even at our latitudes, and it is hence time for a new
newsletter from SLU Water Forum, the fourth one. Since last autumn, a lot has as
usual happened in the water area at SLU. Among other things, SLU's water
research was successful in the annual calls from Formas and the Swedish
Research Council (VR), many nice scientific articles have been published,
several water-related PhD-thesis have been defended, a successful seminar with younger water researchers at SLU was held, and activities and events
at the Baltic Sea Science Center at Skansen have been undertaken. We are now
looking forward to an intense and highly interesting spring and summer with,
among other things, an upcoming call from Formas national research program for oceans and water, the finalization of a SLU led MISTRA application. We can all also contribute
to spreading our knowledge about water to the outside world through a targeted engagement
in Wikipedia. Learn more in this newsletter. To round-off, I would like to
mention the good news that the NJ faculty will finance SLU Water Forum in the
coming years.
Jens
Olsson, coordinator SLU Water Forum
P.S. We
welcome suggestions on how we can keep SLU Water Forum up to date, interesting
and relevant, and how we can contribute to strengthening cooperation on water
at SLU. Do not hesitate in providing suggestions to water@slu.se. |

Teacher training at the
Baltic Sea Science Center - eutrophication
October 29, Jenna Senecal and Anastasija Vasiljev (both from the
Department of Energy and Technology) participated in a teacher
training at the Baltic Sea Science Center (Skansen) with a focus on how
innovations can reduce eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Jenna and Anastasia

Water research at SLU
funded from Formas and VR
|
Water research at SLU
does very well in the competition for research funding from the Swedish
Research Council (VR) and Formas. No less than 20 projects with a clear water
connection at SLU received funding from the research calls opened in 2021.

World Water Day, 22 March
As in previous years, SLU Water Forum put extra focus during the days
around this year's World Water Day. The theme for 2022 was "Groundwater,
make the invisible visible". Consider the SLU news focused
on groundwater that we shared, and the interview with Lutz
Ahrens, associate professor at the Department of Water and the Environment.

Climate in focus at Baltic
Sea Science Center
|
March 31, Magnus
Huss and Jonas Hentati
Sundberg (both senior lecturers at the Department of Aquatic Resources) gave
lectures on how climate change affects marine life at a teacher
training event at the Baltic Sea Science Center (Skansen). The
initiative is part of the Formas-financed project Our warmer sea, which is aimed at
school classes and is a collaboration between Skansen and SLU. As part of the
project, a learning
platform on the climate impact on the Baltic Sea was recently launched. | | | | | | New senior specialists in environmental analyses |
April 1, SLU's latest senior environmental analyses specialists gave
their lectures. Two of
these, Stefan Palm and
Stefan Larsson (both Department of Aquatic Resources), work with water issues
and then more specifically fish. Congratulations Stefan and Stefan!

SLU led application to
Mistra’s call on Blue economy
Anna Gårdmark (professor at the Department of Aquatic Resources)
leads an application to Mistra’s call A sustainable blue economy for
Sweden. The Mistra
Blue Pathways application, which focuses on a transition to a blue economy
in the Swedish marine waters in the light of climate change and strengthened
biodiversity, has, as one of three applications, proceeded to step two in the application process.
In addition to researchers from SLU, the group
behind the application also consists of researchers from the Agrifood Economics Center in Lund, Stockholm University, KTH, University of Gothenburg, RISE, IVL and
Innovatum Science Park.

SLU Water Forum´s second internal water seminar
On 26-27 April, young water researchers gathered at Campus Ultuna for the event Future water research at SLU – a seminar on perspectives from younger scholars. In addition to lectures from 13 young water researchers at SLU, Sophie Carler, research secretary at Formas, gave a presentation on the National research program for oceans and water. About 40 persons
participated in the seminar that covered a broad range of topics, from aquatic
microbiology, plankton, eutrophication and water in forests, to the effects of
pharmaceutical residues and fish in lakes and oceans.
