Virtual Reality Studio in Dhaka creates playground for community
Since the 1990’s, architectural students at Chalmers have had the opportunity to apply for a master course called “Reality Studio”, which has included every year a several weeks long field trip to East Africa, and in recent years most often to Kisumu in Kenya. However, as the pandemic made travelling impossible, the organisers have had to re-define the course. As a result, the most recent team of students have been working virtually with five different places around the world: in addition to Kisumu also in Buenos Aires, Pretoria, Beirut and Dhaka.
The Reality Studio collaboration with Dhaka was the topic for the Global Sustainable Futures webinar on 20 April.

”Antikorruption som förutsättning för de Globala målen”
Så löd rubriken för den forumträff som Agenda 2030 i Väst bjöd in till den 21 april, i samarbete med WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award. Under träffen fick de ca 90 deltagarna lära sig mer om hur korruption försvårar för genomförandet av Globala målen samt om korruptionens utbredning och komplexitet. Dessutom fick de delta i samtal med sakkunniga med erfarenhet av antikorruptionsarbete inom olika sektorer samt vara med när årets mottagare av WIN WIN Award 2021 annonserades. Läs mer

Icelandic whistleblower Jóhannes Stefánsson is the 2021 winner of WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award
The 2021 winner of the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award has been revealed. The prestigious award goes to the Icelandic whistleblower Jóhannes Stefánsson who, with his life at stake, led the revelation of a widespread corruption scandal connected to fishing quotas in Namibia. The prize of 1 million SEK is presented to the winner at the award ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden in October.

GMV lyfter engagerade studenter för
hållbarhet
GMV:s Student Sustainability Hub har
som mål att skapa intresseväckande tvärvetenskapliga plattformar och
aktiviteter där studenter vid Göteborgs universitet och Chalmers kan utbyta
kunskap och lära sig mer om hållbar utveckling. I studenttidningen Götheborgske
Spionen intervjuas projektledaren Karin Bylund där hon berättar mer om
studentengagemanget i hållbarhetsfrågor och om kampanjen #StudentsOfGBG som
lyfter hållbarhetshjältar på de båda lärosätena.

Den hala tvålen – ny rapport från Regeringskansliet
Rapporten Den hala tvålen - verktyg och metoder för social hållbarhet i fysisk planering som publicerades tidigare i april kartlägger verktyg och metoder som används för att åskådliggöra sociala värden i fysisk planering. Rapporten från Finansdepartementet nämner flera Urban Futures och tidigare Mistra Urban Futures projekt och publikationer.

Framtidens Göteborg – teknostad, ekostad eller annat?
Göteborgs luft- och klimatnätverk, GAC bjuder in till frukostmöte för att diskutera Göteborgs framtida
luftmiljö ur ett brett perspektiv.
Vi diskuterar utvecklingsmöjligheter för staden med fokus på Göteborgs framtida luftmiljö ur ett brett perspektiv. Vi tar avstamp i en presentation över hur stadens luftmiljö har utvecklats historiskt.
Från detta gör vi en utblick över vad vi kan förvänta oss för fortsatt utveckling av luftmiljön och hur det kopplar till den framtida stadsutvecklingen när det gäller stadsplanering och byggande. Vi diskuterar möjligheter utifrån perspektiven stadsplanering, byggande och transporter inklusive de målkonflikter som kan uppkomma, till exempel transporter kontra luftmiljö och förtätning kontra behov av offentliga grönytor. Hur kommer utvecklingstrender inom dessa områden påverka stadens resiliens och luftmiljö?

Att styra mot socialt hållbara städer –
Stadsplanerings-investeringars effekter och värden
Vilka effekter får stadsplanering och investeringar på människors livsvillkor? Hur vi utvecklar och utformar staden påverkar inte bara den fysiska miljön, det påverkar också människors sociala förutsättningar under lång tid framöver.
Projektet SIGURD: Stadsplaneringsinvesteringars effekter och värden undersöker hur aktörer inom stadsutveckling kan mäta och omvandla sociala värden till ekonomiska variabler i investeringskalkyler och samhällsekonomiska bedömningar. I denna konferens får ni ta del av rapporter, fallstudier i Göteborg och Borås, implementeringsförslag och samtal om de stora utmaningarna och möjliga vägar framåt.
Seminariet är kostnadsfritt. Sista anmälningsdag 25 maj.

Efterspelet kring LAS: Hur blir det med omställningen och kompetensförsörjningen i framtiden? Researchers Roundtable for Sustainability

The University of Gothenburg in global top 50 for sustainability
The University of Gothenburg has taken the 49th spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of the world’s universities based on alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This is four places lower than last year, but a record number of institutions took part this time: 1,115 compared with 766 in the previous ranking.

Spår av mikroplast har hittats i glaciär på Island
Vatnajökull på sydöstra Island
är en av de största glaciärerna i Europa och täcker ett område på 8400
kvadratkilometer. Nu har forskare vid Göteborgs universitet, Icelandic Meteorological Office
och Reykjaviks universitet, identifierat mikroplastpartiklar i olika
storlekar och material i glaciärens snökärnor med optisk mikroskopi och
spektroskopi.

New global report on research funding organisations and gender dimensions
According to the European Commission, the gender dimension should be included in research when relevant. Methods of sex and gender analysis in research serve to enhance scientific excellence as well as to enhance the lives of men and women. This is also stated in policies of many national research funding organisations (RFOs). But how do they work to implement them? A new report, The Gender Dimension in Research and Innovation, brings more knowledge on this topic.

The financial services sector has the potential to be a fundamental vehicle to promote sustainability and act as a role model for other actors. However, financial services has not yet taken this lead role despite how topics such as the cost of capital, risk mitigation, financial innovation and digitalisation are at the heart of finance. Överskattning av skogsavverkningar
Förra året publicerade tidskriften Nature en studie om Europas skogsbruk framtagen av forskare vid EU-kommissionens gemensamma forskningscentrum. Nu ifrågasätts den av 33 europeiska forskare, varav fyra från svenska universitet, däribland Chalmers. De menar att den korrekta siffran är 6 procent högre avverkningstakt istället för 69 procent.

Researchers: EU climate law a step in the right direction
Following negotiations, EU countries have agreed on a climate law which contains stricter targets for reduced emissions. Deliang Chen, a Professor of physical meteorology who has extensive experience from working within the UN Scientific Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, believes that this new law sends an important signal.

MIRAI 2.0 Digital Research and Innovation week
The University of Gothenburg is coordinating the Swedish-Japanese collaboration MIRAI 2.0. The project focuses on early career researchers and aims to increase and deepen research collaboration between Sweden and Japan. On June 7-11, 2021 the University of Gothenburg is hosting MIRAI 2.0 Digital Research and Innovation week. The event will include a number of scientific sessions within Ageing, Material Science, Sustainability, AI, Innovation and Entrepreneurship as well as matchmaking activities, poster session and more. It is a great opportunity for early career researchers to join interesting workshops and connect with potential collaboration partners in Sweden and Japan. The event is connected to an upcoming seed funding call for collaborative projects between Japanese and Swedish researchers.

koldixoxidbudget tagits fram. Nu bjuds studenter och medarbetare på
Göteborgs universitet in att delta på digitala workshops och tycka till
om förslagen. På workshoptillfällena redovisas arbetet så här långt och
möjlighet finns att diskutera förslagen till klimatväxling och
koldioxidbudget. Syftet är att samla in synpunkter och
förbättringsförslag innan förslagen går vidare till beslut.
