CMESNewsletter #33January/February 2023 | | | | Message From the DirectorStarting 2023 with welcoming the Olof Palme visiting professor, new seminar program and CMES call.CMES starts off the new year and the spring semester by welcoming the incoming Olof Palme visiting professor Raphael Cohen-Almagor. An inaugural public lecture titled “Ethics, Justice, Peace and Social Responsibility” will be held on 6 March. It is co-organized by the Department of Political Science and the Swedish Research Council. The CMES spring seminar program covers a broad range of exciting topics from migration, art, peace, terrorism, and ancient history to democracy in the Middle East. First out in January was a seminar on Syrians’ migration to Europe and in early February CMES co-organized a seminar with the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies on identities and religious belonging in the Middle East and a workshop on writing policy-briefs at the Pufendorf Institute. Coming up next is a seminar on practicing piety trough art among Shia in Kuwait and the UK. During the spring semester, CMES will announce a number of calls for project proposals, post-docs, research initiation, and travel, field work and conferences so keep posted on the website! There is also one call already open for a CMES writing retreat during the autumn semester with deadline coming up at the end of March.
With small but safe signs of spring in the garden at Finngatan 16, we are all looking forwarding to exciting research activities at CMES this spring semester! Stay tuned on CMES website, social media and by subscribing to the Newsletter! | Karin AggestamCMES Director and MECW Coordinator
| | | | Mohammad Bouazizi and the Arab SpringCMES doctoral researcher Joel Abdelmoez has been interviewed by Radio Sweden about the 12th anniversary of Mohammed Bouazizi's death in Tunisia and the Arab Spring. Tunisia was celebrated as a successful case of democratisation after the Arab Spring. Unfortunately, this development has been reversed following President Saeid's "self-coup" in 2021 when he suspended parliament. The interview aired on 5 January 2023 on P4 Kristianstad. These bombings against Kurdish targets in northern Syria have worsened the already strained humanitarian situation in the al-Hol refugee camp. Continued attacks risk further destabilizing the region, thwarting international coordination to dismantle the camp and children being radicalized into the next generation of IS terrorists. Read the article in Swedish from 13 December 2022 here. | | | | Is Diplomacy Still Relevant?CMES Director Karin Aggestam has been interviewed about the lack of diplomatic negotiations in Ukraine. The war in Ukraine has been going on for a year, but, so far, the focus has been placed on arms deliveries rather than on diplomacy. Karin argues that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a crystal clear example of an attack against a sovereign state which is prohibited by international law, which is what makes diplomatic negotiations difficult.
