CMESNewsletter #42February 2024 | | | | Message From the DirectorCMES continues to conduct media analyses and write articles, including several pieces in the Conversation, on the Israel-Hamas war and the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. CMES also wants to acknowledge the important mission that the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) at Lund University has been assigned in reviewing UNWRA (UN Relief & Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees) at the request of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. CMES has also taken the initiative to offer a reading course during the spring on the Israel-Palestine conflict for staff and students at Lund University. Please note that the deadline for applications is 8 March 2024.
In February, a broad range of activities were held at CMES. The Director of the Swedish Dialogue Institute in Amman, Charlotta Sparre, held an inspirational talk underscoring the indispensable role of dialogues in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in times of geopolitical challenges in the region. Additionally, a workshop focusing on the nexus between conflict and environment in Kurdistan was organised by the new MECW-project ‘ECO-Syria’, exploring the multifaceted politico-environmental dimensions of the war in Syria. CMES continues to grow with nearly 50 staff members! We extend a warm welcome to Altea Pericoli and Filippo Verre, our two new post-doctoral researchers, who will be working on geopolitics, water security, humanitarian aid and regional cooperation in the Middle East. Ilkin Mehrabov is spending a month at CMES on a writing retreat, and assisting our research projects are 11 engaged master students who just started up their internships at CMES. Finally, the recruitment process for the tenure track position in Islamic studies has been successfully concluded, and CMES is looking forward to welcoming Dr. Sami Al-Daghistani during the forthcoming autumn semester. As the wintry grip of February recedes, we note the emergence of delicate yellow blossoms (‘vintergäck’), which start to cover the garden. This is the safest sign that spring is finally arriving at CMES 🌱 For the latest CMES news, subscribe to the Newsletter!
